Sienna

“Promise me you won’t tell anybody else. It is a very special thing for Connor.”

Jane eyed me weirdly.

“If you think he will come at me, then maybe you shouldn’t tell me anything”

“Argh, just say it” I groaned, tugging at my hair.

“Obviously, I wont, Sienna. The most I would tell is Olivia, our friend who is missing from this very important phase of your life.”

We were a group of three inseparable friends but ever since Olivia transferred to another faraway city for studies, our contact was minimal.

“Ok fine”

I took a deep breath and then told her about the hospital visit with Connor, starting with the good part first, about meeting his mother, about the whole cake cutting ceremony before she grew angry and threw Connor out of the room on our first visit and then proceeded to the details of the next. Jane listened with her whole face and went very quiet.

Then I showed her the note.

She took it and read it a few times just like me and sat silent for a while which for Jane was unusual.

“That’s so messed up,” she said, softly.

“I know.”

Jane got up from her seat and began pacing the room.

“He took you to meet his mother,” she said. “On her birthday. The thing he does completely alone every year.”

She looked at me with the expression that meant she was about to say something she considered very important. “Do you understand what that means, Sienna?”

“I do, I said.

“Because I don’t think so,” she didn’t seem to agree with me.

“I’m not sure you understand that a man who has money, fame, good looks could have literally taken anybody along with him and yet he took you”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I frowned,

She set the note down carefully. “Sienna. My darling and my oldest friend. Do you still actually want Aaron?”

Chapter 112

I opened my mouth.

“Think before you answer,” she said. “Actually think.”

I did and realized there was no straight answer.

“It’s complicated,” I muttered finally, which was not an answer and we both knew it.

“Uh huh,” Jane tutted.

“Okay. I’m going to tell you what I think and you’re going to let me finish before you argue.” She pulled her legs under her and settled in on the chair once again.

“I think you got so used to wanting Aaron that you forgot to check if you still did. And I think Connor showed up and your body understood something before your brain caught up, which is why you’ve been acting completely insane for the past three weeks.” She tilted her head. “Was I close?”

I looked at my hands.

“You were close,” I replied meekly.

“I’m always close,” she nodded without sounding smug.

“Now.” She picked up the note again. “Can you tell me what exactly happened at this masked ball?”

I told her everything that left her mouth hanging open.

“Stop,” she said raising her hand in front of my face. “Stop. He beat up three men for you?”

“He also kissed and publicly made out with two girls in front of me first,” I added. “In case you are forgetting.”

“That’s-” She processed this. “Okay, that’s actually very casanova of him, I respect it. He proved his point without saying a word to you”

“What point?”

She pointed at me. “He knew you would get jealous and you did.”

“No, I was just concerned about him and the public image of the pack”

“You were feral,” Jane shook her head, with great fondness.

“This is exactly like a cliche romantic film. The one where the bad boy turns out to be completely devoted to one specific person and everyone else is just a background character for him.”

She grabbed my arm. “Sienna. You are living every girl’s biggest dream ever.”

“Can we focus on the note,” I sighed. Jane was a hopeless romantic and tended to exaggerate things a lot.

“Yeah so she asked you to find Peter Rabbit and meet her alone.”

“He told me that she used to tell him stories as a kid and how much he loved it,” I supplied.

Jane scratched her temple.

“Okay, I’m not going to spiral about how sad that is because we’re being practical.” She tapped the note. “So this is definitely a story she read to him. And she wants you to find them and–what? Give them to her?”

“I think so,” I said. “She also told me to come alone meaning she didn’t want Connor finding out about this”

Jane went quiet again. “And you haven’t told him any of this?”

I shook my head. “I can’t. And please don’t tell me to because I won’t”

“Hmm that certainly makes things a bit difficult.”

“She didn’t tell you where to find this storybook, right? Any clue that she gave to you about its location?”

I had already replayed my little meeting with her several times in my head and I couldn’t remember her telling me anything related to Peter Rabbit.

“Nope,” I sighed.

“Then there is just one possibility. You have to ask him.“”

I whirled around to face her. “What?”

“I mean who else could you ask if not for his mother or him. But she already asked you to meet her the next time with the book so I dont think you can just barge in the hospital to ask her the location of a storybook.”

I agreed. “Yes, I can’t”

“So your only option is to extract that information from him tactfully. He shouldn’t realize what he is giving to you or why.”

Trying to hide something from Connor about his mother was one thing, actively interrogating him and then going to meet her behind his back was another.

But the meeting part would come later, first I had to find out where this storybook is and examine it for myself. Maybe she was just hallucinating or she really wanted to tell me something in secret.

“Where do you think his mother’s stuff would be? He wouldn’t have thrown it all away” Jane reasoned.

“I hope it is somewhere in the mansion. Because he was in another city all this time so I hope he brought her stuff along instead of leaving it back there.”

“Hmm. I don’t think he would leave it if he is so attached to his mother which is a good thing. Her stuff is probably in the mansion itself so that narrows down our search considerably.”

1 scoffed. “That mansion is no less than a maze with hundreds of rooms.”

“So you need to find out which room,” Jane replied like she had found a solution already. “Without him knowing why you’re asking.” She pointed at me. “Call him.”

“Right now?”

“Yes,” she bobbed her head up and down. “Ask him if he was okay and then slowly bring up the topic about his mom. Be casual and then bring up the books naturally. It’s simple.”

“It’s not simple,” I felt nervous. “Nothing about this is simple, when I talk to him my brain just stops working and I am not a good liar, Jane”

“Then put the phone on speaker,” she came up with another idea. “I’ll help when you get stuck.”

“Absolutely not!”

“I’ll be silent and he will not even realize,” she said very confidently.

“Jane this is a bad idea….and maybe we should…” I was in the middle of talking when she snatched my phone from my hand and dialed his number.

“What the fuck, Jane?”
