Stefan was the most coveted bachelor in the capital's elite circles. For a long time, everyone assumed he would eventually marry either Maeve Mallory or Ophelia Powell. But with Maeve exiled abroad and Stefan publicly distancing himself from Ophelia, the playing field was suddenly wide open. Winning Margaret's favor today could be the ultimate stepping stone to becoming the next Mrs. Goddard.
Up in the VIP viewing box, Margaret Shepherd, Sylvan Scully, and Ryder Powell were having drinks while watching the girls on the track.
Margaret let out a weary sigh. "Stefan's marriage prospects are a complete headache. I don't know when he'll finally settle down with a woman I actually approve of."
"It's baffling that he isn't interested in Ophelia," Sylvan remarked, shaking his head. "She's flawless."
Ryder remained silent, his expression unreadable.
Margaret turned her attention to Sylvan. "Is Giselle doing well? Why don't you bring her to the capital? I'd love to introduce her to Stefan."
Sylvan shifted uncomfortably, avoiding her gaze. "There's no rush. Besides, Wynne is the one who has the final say on Giselle's marriage. I don't interfere."
Margaret looked over at Ryder. "Do you think Wynne would agree to it?"
Ryder's voice was frigid. "The children in our family aren't produce to be picked over at a market. Marriage is their own business. We don't dictate their lives."
Shut down, Margaret tightened her jaw and turned back to Sylvan. She gestured sharply toward Winona on the track. "How can we not intervene? If we leave it up to them, they drag home some nobody with no pedigree, and my reputation becomes the laughingstock of the city."
"You have a point," Sylvan agreed immediately. "Stefan is exceptional, but his taste in women clearly needs refinement."
Hearing them tear down Wynne's biological daughter—his own daughter—made Ryder's blood run cold. "I think Ms. Jowett is outstanding, and she's a perfect match for Stefan. Your only issue is her background. But let's not pretend your own families were royalty a few generations ago. I suggest you show Ms. Jowett some respect."
Margaret and Sylvan exchanged confused glances, completely taken aback by Ryder's sudden hostility. But Ryder was notoriously cold and uncompromising, so they didn't press the issue.
