Winona wrapped up her conversation with her colleagues, walked into the conference room, and set her laptop on the table. She completely bypassed the small talk and looked directly at Giselle. "I've organized all the preliminary data. You can copy it now."
Giselle, desperate not to seem inferior, immediately defended herself. "It's not that we couldn't generate this data ourselves. We just didn't want to waste time redoing foundational experiments."
Winona gave a curt nod. "Mhm, completely understandable."
Seeing Winona so utterly unfazed, as if her words hadn't even registered, Giselle felt an infuriating sensation—like she had just thrown a punch into a pile of cotton.
Once the transfer was complete, Winona packed up her laptop and turned to leave.
"Winona, wait," Giselle said suddenly. "About what happened at the hospital... I'm really sorry. The cut hurt so much that I didn't explain things properly, and it made my dad misunderstand you. I apologize. But you have to know, he was just acting out of love for me. Please don't hold it against him."
"Noted," Winona replied coldly.
She could see right through Giselle. After dealing with absolute manipulators like Tallulah and Ophelia, her radar for this kind of behavior was perfectly tuned. Whatever Giselle tried to pull, she'd just treat it like a cheap comedy act.
"So you're not mad?" Giselle pressed. "How about we grab lunch together?"
"I'm busy. I'll pass."
Giselle shifted her tactics. "I actually wanted to talk to you about my mom's health. You know she was in a coma for a while after the accident, and she still needs regular rehab at the clinic. I'm swamped with work and can't always be there for her. I was hoping you could help me look after her."
Hearing it was about Wynne, Winona softened slightly and agreed. "Fine. We'll get lunch."
It was only 11:30. Giselle headed to a private booth at a nearby restaurant first.
Winona finished up her tasks and arrived at ten past twelve.
The second she walked into the booth, she saw Yulen Locke sitting right next to Giselle.
A wave of revulsion hit Winona. She spun around to leave, but Giselle stood up and grabbed her arm.
"Winona, wait! Yulen is a friend of mine. I heard you two used to know each other, so you wouldn't mind having lunch together, right?"
