Ever since being thrown into the shark tank with Dora, Maeve's psychological state had completely fractured. She was heavily medicated and required hypnosis just to sleep.
During the day, she was completely unhinged. Because Mrs. Mallory refused to allow the caretakers to physically restrain her, Maeve spent her hours throwing tantrums, smashing furniture, and violently lashing out at the staff.
Once, when Kieran had tried to wheel himself upstairs to calm her, she had viciously kicked him. Since then, even he was too terrified to go near her.
The house was constantly filled with her blood-curdling screams and the sound of shattering glass. The staff were completely burnt out, and upon hearing they wouldn't have to accompany her to Yelden Country, they were silently celebrating.
Stefan looked at her with absolute disgust. "Maeve. You're going to Yelden Country for treatment."
Maeve stared at him in horrified disbelief. "Stefan... you're sending me away? Why? How could you do this to me? I'm your fiancée!"
Just then, Mrs. Mallory rushed through the front door. Hearing that Stefan was banishing her daughter, she immediately threw herself in front of Maeve.
"Stefan, what do you think you're doing?!" she screamed shrilly. "Maeve is incredibly vulnerable right now! If you exile her, who's going to protect her?"
Stefan let out a dark, mocking laugh. "If she stays here, she's only going to hurt more people. Last night, she hired thugs to track and attack Winona. Don't tell me you were completely in the dark about that, Mrs. Mallory."
Of course she knew. But she hadn't lifted a finger to stop it.
She wanted Winona dead just as much as Maeve did. That bitch had stolen her daughter's life!
"But Winona is perfectly fine!" Mrs. Mallory shrieked, desperate. "You can't do this! My husband literally took a bullet for you! Maeve was practically your wife! How can you be so utterly heartless?!"
Stefan's voice dropped to a lethal whisper. "I have paid off my debt to this family ten times over. And need I remind you why Evander is dead? Your daughter was complicit in driving my brother to suicide!"
Mrs. Mallory froze, all the blood draining from her face.
The mention of the name seemed to snap something in Maeve's fractured mind. She stopped struggling, her eyes glazing over as she muttered frantically, "It wasn't me... Stefan, I didn't..."
Kieran was wheeled out from the hallway by a caretaker.
"Let her go," he croaked to his wife.
Mrs. Mallory was weeping in agony, but she didn't dare fight Stefan any further.
Maeve tried to scream again, but the bodyguards seamlessly dragged her out the front door.
Even though she had survived decades of false hope and dead ends, the failure of this trip had completely crushed her spirit. She wondered if she would ever find her lost children in this lifetime.
The maid led Winona to the studio door.
Before she could knock, Wynne's exhausted voice drifted out. "I'm not hungry. Don't worry about me. Just leave me alone."
"It's me, Wynne," Winona said softly.
Hearing her voice, Wynne immediately opened the door.
Winona's heart ached at the sight of her. Wynne had lost weight, and there were dark circles bruising her under-eyes. "You haven't been sleeping well, have you?"
Wynne sighed, taking Winona's hand and leading her to the sofa. She didn't understand it, but every time she saw Winona, an overwhelming wave of maternal warmth washed over her.
"My heart is just heavy, so sleep is hard to come by. I'll be fine in a few days. Have you eaten? I'll have the chef prepare something for you."
Winona smiled gently. "You need to keep drinking the herbal tea I gave you. And honestly, I'd feel terrible eating all by myself while you sit there. If you don't eat, I won't either."
