"But didn't Ezra say the first car didn't have local plates?" Winona asked, confused.
"They both used fake plates to frame each other," Stefan explained dryly. "Maeve's guys claimed they were from Riverton, hired by Mrs. Locke. Tallulah's guys claimed they were hired by my mother. After a little... persuasion, they gave up the truth."
Winona was speechless. It was almost comical how identical their deranged thought processes were.
"I want to handle Tallulah myself," Winona said firmly. "But as for Maeve..."
She knew taking down Maeve involved the Mallory family, which was completely out of her jurisdiction.
"Mrs. Mallory promised me she would keep Maeve on a tight leash," Stefan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Since she failed, I'm done being polite."
Remembering the vicious beating Stefan had endured for them previously, Winona frowned. "Will your father be angry?"
"Mr. Mallory suffered a stroke partly because of my actions, which is why I took that punishment without fighting back. But taking those hits completely wiped the slate clean. They can no longer use guilt to manipulate me. Now that they've actively enabled Maeve to try and kill you, no one in my family can say a damn word about what I do next."
At 7:00 PM the following evening, Stefan arrived at the Mallory estate.
Since his stroke, Kieran Mallory was confined to a wheelchair. His speech was slurred and labored, making him entirely unfit to run Mallory Enterprises, leaving the company in the hands of his younger brother.
Mrs. Mallory, who served as a vice president, was still at the office.
Maeve was locked on the third floor, supervised by a specialized psychiatrist and an in-house caretaker.
When Stefan walked in, the caretaker was feeding Kieran.
Seeing him, Kieran forced out the words, "Ste... fan."
"Mr. Mallory," Stefan greeted flatly, pouring himself a glass of water.
Kieran gave the caretaker a weak shake of his head. She wiped his mouth and quietly took the tray away.
Stefan sat across from him. "How is your health?"
Kieran knew perfectly well that without Stefan's continuous backing, Mallory Enterprises would have collapsed long ago. He also knew that weaponizing his past favors to force Stefan into submission would eventually sever their ties entirely.
"She is being sent abroad. Immediately," Stefan ordered. "She will never set foot in the Capital again. And the staff accompanying her will be chosen exclusively by me."
The current bodyguards and caretakers were completely subservient to Maeve and completely useless at managing her psychotic breaks.
Kieran knew this would push Maeve entirely over the edge. But to ensure her financial survival, he had to surrender. "Alright. But... promise me. You'll protect... her inheritance."
"Done."
Stefan had already instructed Ezra to hire two elite security personnel and a strict caretaker. They would be escorting Maeve to Yelden Country.
Having no idea what was happening, Maeve was escorted downstairs.
The second she saw Stefan, her eyes lit up with manic joy, and she lunged forward to embrace him, only to be effortlessly blocked by a new bodyguard.
"Get your hands off me!" she shrieked.
