Winona ripped her arm from Ezra's grasp and bolted toward the wreckage.
The front end of the Maybach was crumpled inward. She slammed her hands against the window, her voice cracking with terror.
"Stefan! Stefan, answer me!"
"Ms. Jowett, step back!" Ezra commanded, moving in quickly. "Let me get the door open."
Winona stumbled back, her eyes wide and panicked, watching helplessly.
Ezra quickly used a tactical tool to smash the rear window, reaching in to unlock the door. He yanked the driver's side door open, revealing Stefan slumped in the seat, half-conscious.
Tears spilled down Winona's cheeks. Together, she and Ezra dragged Stefan out of the mangled vehicle and rushed him to the hospital.
After thirty agonizing minutes of examinations and scans, Stefan finally regained full consciousness.
Winona was sitting rigidly beside his bed, gripping his hand as if her life depended on it.
Stefan offered a weak, reassuring smile. "I'm fine."
His gaze dropped to the bloody scrapes along her arm, and his brow furrowed. "Why didn't you let the doctors patch you up?"
Winona had been so consumed with terror for his life that she hadn't even felt the impact of diving into the grass. Only now did the stinging in her arms and legs register.
Stefan immediately called a nurse in to clean and bandage her wounds.
Ezra, who had taken the brunt of the fall while shielding Winona, had already been treated. He stepped into the room to deliver his report.
"We have both drivers in custody."
Stefan's eyes turned lethal, a sub-zero chill radiating from him. "Break them. I want to know exactly who gave the order."
"Yes, sir."
After the doctors cleared him, Stefan and Winona finally returned to the hotel.
She had survived far too much with him to cower at the first sign of danger.
In the car, Winona calmly pulled out her tablet to review her project files. Watching her unfazed demeanor, Ezra felt a surge of profound respect. It made perfect sense why Mr. Goddard was entirely devoted to her. After nearly being killed the night before, she was just going to work like it was a normal Tuesday.
At 8:00 PM, Winona returned to the hotel suite.
Stefan had finished his business early and was waiting for her. Room service delivered dinner.
After they ate, Stefan finally brought up the investigation. "The men who tried to run you off the road talked."
Ezra and Waldo had been with Stefan through far worse crises. Extracting information from hired thugs was light work for them.
"Who was it?" Winona asked.
"The first tail was sent by Maeve Mallory; Waldo handled them. The car that tried to hit you was hired by Tallulah Shipley."
