Phoebe thanked her profusely and asked to exchange numbers, insisting she wanted to treat Winona to a home-cooked meal once they were in the capital.
"I'd love that," Winona smiled, accepting the invite.
The other two wealthy mothers sitting nearby had watched the whole interaction and immediately asked for Winona's contact info as well, hoping she could look at their own kids' digestive issues once they landed.
Winona politely clarified, "My actual career is in pharmaceutical R&D, so my hands-on experience as a holistic healer is actually quite limited. I only know the absolute basics. For real medical issues, you ladies should definitely seek out a licensed specialist."
Though her grandfather had taught her everything he knew, practicing medicine required decades of clinical experience. She understood the theory, but without that daily practice, she would never arrogantly assume she could diagnose people casually, save for clear-cut emergencies.
Sitting across the aisle, Karina scoffed loudly. "You people are so gullible. Letting some unlicensed amateur practice voodoo on your kid? You're lucky the brat didn't drop dead. God, there are so many brainless idiots in the world!"
Her comment instantly infuriated the other women.
The older, fiercer lady who had defended Phoebe earlier snapped. "A baby crying because she's in pain is one thing, because she hasn't developed yet. What's your excuse? You're a full-grown adult throwing a tantrum and screaming insults. Did your brain just stop developing? If sharing a cabin with the rest of us bothers you so much, why didn't you charter a private jet? Oh, wait, let me guess—your wallet couldn't handle it?"
Karina was a classic bully who folded the second someone actually fought back. Intimidated by the wealthy woman's dominant aura, she shrank back in her seat. "I'm not wasting my breath on a bunch of hags," she muttered.
She aggressively yanked her sleep mask down and didn't make another peep for the rest of the flight.
The plane touched down in the capital.
Winona and Phoebe walked out of the terminal together. Winona gently poked the baby's soft, pink cheek, a sudden pang of sadness hitting her as she thought of the child she had lost.
Phoebe smiled warmly. "Once you're settled and have some free time, you have to call me. My family is very easygoing, they'd absolutely love to host you."
"I will," Winona promised.
Winona had zero interest in acknowledging her and remained entirely silent.
Taking her silence as an insult, Karina let out a mocking laugh. "Don't tell me you're one of the mistresses belonging to the Goddard playboys? Hah! Coming straight to the front door to beg for a payout? You are shameless. Women of your... caliber don't get past these gates. Get lost."
The Goddard family had yet to divide their assets.
Violet, the matriarch, had two biological sons: Gabriel, the eldest, and Orion, the youngest. The middle son, Kade, was adopted by the late patriarch. With the sole exception of Stefan, the men in the Goddard family were notorious, unrestrained playboys.
Winona looked at her with cool indifference. "I'm here for Stefan."
Karina stared at her for a second before bursting into cruel laughter.
"You're looking for Stefan?! Oh my god, you're just as delusional as Maeve Mallory! Stefan isn't like his garbage uncles. He doesn't stoop to picking up trash off the street!"
