The Wife He Forgot to Marry (Winona and Yule) novel Chapter 333

Winona bit back a bitter laugh. Where in the world was there a job that was both effortless and allowed a woman to perfectly manage a household?

Whenever something happened to a child, the mother was always the first to be crucified. No one ever considered the impossible balancing act women were forced to perform.

Even children internalized this; when they were sick and lacking comfort, their first instinct was to resent their mothers, not their fathers.

Was a father's absence just an accepted fact of nature?

Once Greta's IV finished, Yulen stayed by her side through a battery of follow-up tests.

Nikita leaned over to Winona. "See? A man like Yulen is a rare breed. He gives you money, love, and his time. He doesn't even care that you don't come from money, and yet you're the one pushing him away?"

Winona lost the will to even respond.

Back at the house, Greta was tucked into the guest room to rest.

Helena didn't get home until after ten o'clock.

As a nurse, she was bound to her shifts at the hospital, running herself ragged for her patients even while her own child was sick.

When she had seen Winona's text earlier, every fiber of her being had wanted to rush home.

But if she walked out on her shift, her department would have collapsed into chaos.

She couldn't be that selfish, which meant Greta had to bear the brunt of her absence.

Looking at her mother's exhausted face, Greta's resentment melted away, though her lower lip still trembled. "Mom, I really wished you could have been there with me today."

Helena pulled her daughter into a tight hug. "I'm so sorry, baby."

Greta thought about what Winona had told her earlier. "Winona said the doctors and nurses helping me today have kids too. If they all left work to take care of their own kids, then no one would have been there to help me and the other sick children.

"She said your job is really important, and even if you can't be there, you still love me and worry about me."

She would never accept a favor from Yulen and put Winona in a tougher spot.

Plus, she had no intention of giving up her nursing career.

"No, thank you. I don't want a transfer."

Nikita’s temper flared at her stubbornness. "Did this whole ordeal with Greta teach you nothing? Helena, do you have no sympathy for your own child?"

"Of course I do! But Greta just told me she understands. I'm not going to throw away a career I've spent years building."

Nikita scoffed coldly. "Fine. I can't force you. Just don't come crying to me later. You and Winona are both constantly working. Do you really think someone will magically be available every time Greta gets sick?"

Helena knew she’d never see eye-to-eye with her mother, and she was too exhausted to argue. Turning to Yulen and Winona, she said, "I'm going to sleep in Greta's room tonight. I'll take her back to our place in the morning."

Yulen smiled graciously. "This is your home too, Aunt Helena. Stay as long as you like."
