The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback (Felicia and Max) novel Chapter 984

After breakfast, it was time to leave. It was Monday, and Felicia had to go to work. She figured that if Anne did not want to stay home alone, she would just take her to the office. But since Max was here, she could happily leave Anne in his care. Realistically, a man in his position should have mountains of domestic and international business to attend to. She had no idea how long he planned to stay in Cloudville, and she had made a point not to ask during breakfast.

She emerged from her bedroom dressed for work. Anne was playing with the two kittens while Max sat quietly on the sofa watching them. Perhaps because of Anne's presence, his aura had mellowed significantly, and the kittens seemed less terrified of him.

"Anne, Mommy is heading to work now."

Both Anne and Max turned to look at her. His eyes swept over her outfit. She was wearing a breezy blue cotton dress cinched at the waist with a thin belt, her stomach still looking perfectly flat. With her hair in a low ponytail, wearing minimal makeup and comfortable shoes, she looked worlds away from the sharply tailored, sophisticated corporate executive she used to be.

Felicia was painfully aware of his scrutiny. She forced herself to remain calm and ignored his heavy stare as she approached Anne.

"Mommy, can you take the day off today?"

Felicia stepped forward and gently pinched her daughter's cheek. "It is Monday, sweetie. Mommy has meetings and cannot take the day off. Daddy will stay and play with you."

Anne did not push it. "Then Daddy and I will wait for you to come home."

Felicia gave a soft nod and turned toward the entryway. As she was changing her shoes, she heard footsteps and turned to see Max walking toward her.

"Do you need something?" she asked.

"I will walk you to work," Max stated.

Felicia instantly felt a massive headache coming on. This woman was the mother of a tenant downstairs. Shortly after Felicia moved in, she had bumped into the woman in the elevator. Mrs. Higgins was extremely talkative, and Felicia had politely entertained the small talk. After running into her a few more times, the woman had started aggressively trying to set Felicia up with her son, bragging that he was an executive at a big corporation making a high salary. She claimed he was currently away on business and promised to introduce them when he returned. Felicia had politely but firmly declined.

However, Mrs. Higgins had refused to take the hint. She frequently knocked on Felicia's door to drop off random gifts, seemingly trying to snoop and see if a man lived there. It was not until Jeremy started coming around and they were seen commuting together that she finally backed off. One evening, she had knocked while Jeremy was over for dinner. Seeing him there seemed to seal the deal in her mind, and she had finally left Felicia alone.

At the time, Felicia had not bothered to correct the misunderstanding, preferring the peace and quiet. Now, she had absolutely no desire to engage with the woman. She offered a tight, polite smile and tried to keep walking. But after taking only two steps, she heard the man beside her speak.

"Excuse me, ma'am. Who exactly is this boyfriend you are referring to?"

Felicia stopped dead in her tracks and spun around to look at him.
