Felicia was at a loss for words. Anne stared at her mother, completely unyielding. She wasn't going to be distracted this time and demanded an answer.
Tucking the blessed amulet safely away, Felicia took Anne's hand and led her to the sofa. "It's for protection and safety."
"Is it to protect Dad? Is it for him?" Anne's eyes sparkled as she spoke.
"He doesn't need it anymore," Felicia said gently.
"Why doesn't he need it?"
"Because he is safe now."
"But it has Dad's name on it. Why won't you give it to him, Mom?"
Felicia sighed in resignation. "I'll give it to him when he's not so busy." When Anne had her mind set on something, she wasn't easily fooled.
"Okay!" Anne agreed happily.
"But don't tell him about it yet," Felicia instructed.
Anne narrowed her eyes with a mischievous smile. "Is it going to be a surprise for Dad?"
Felicia offered a gentle smile but didn't answer.
"Then I won't tell him," Anne declared with a grin.
Felicia walked over to the other nightstand, pulled the bottle of vitamins from the drawer, and poured out two gummies for Anne to eat.
After coaxing Anne to sleep, Felicia stared at the red pouch in her hand. She wondered if she should just return it to the cathedral. There was no point in handing it over to Max now and humiliating herself. She pulled the drawer open and placed the pouch back inside.
The next day, right after dropping Anne off at school, Felicia received a call from Jeremy. Capital College was hosting an academic symposium, and he asked if she wanted to attend as an auditor. Although she needed to rest at home for her pregnancy, getting out and walking around was also recommended when she felt up to it. Felicia didn't refuse. Staying cooped up at home all day was incredibly boring, and she was getting restless. But if she said she wanted to go back to work, Ava would definitely forbid it. Since she didn't want to fall completely out of touch with her professional field, doing something educational seemed like the perfect compromise. The event was scheduled to start at two o'clock that afternoon.
Max didn't push any further. "Alright then. Pay attention in class, Anne."
"Okay, bye Dad."
"Goodbye, sweetheart."
Max lowered his phone, the tenderness fading from his eyes. His fingers rested on his desk, his index finger tapping rhythmically as his dark eyes stared intently at a fixed point. A coldhearted woman like her probably wanted nothing more than to stay far away from him. What kind of surprise could she possibly have for him? But Anne wouldn't lie to him.
He suddenly stood up, took a step, and then abruptly stopped. Finally, he sat back down in his swivel chair.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
His phone vibrated again. He picked it up, glanced at the caller ID, and remained silent for a few seconds. His breathing gradually steadied as he pressed the answer button and brought the phone to his ear. "Hello."

Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
