The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 6

Over the next few days of her recovery, Jonah finally remembered his actual job description, staying by her side and tending to her around the clock.

But Vivian remained entirely indifferent. No matter what he said or did, she barely offered a reaction.

"Vivian," Jonah sighed, a hint of genuine frustration in his eyes.

"Tell me exactly what I have to do for you to forgive me."

Honestly...

If Vivian hadn't already uncovered his true motives, his gentle coaxing would have easily won her back over.

But unfortunately for him...

Falling for someone could happen in a single heartbeat.

Falling out of love was just as simple.

Looking at Jonah now was no different than looking at a walking punchline.

The joke was on him, but it was on her, too.

Staring at the face she once adored, Vivian replied evenly, "It's not impossible for me to forgive you."

"The food here has been way too bland lately. I'm craving the roast chicken from that spot in the Southside. Go buy it for me, and I'll stop being mad at you."

It was a famously exclusive restaurant in Southampton, and even with an advance reservation, they only held orders for exactly one hour.

To make matters worse, driving there from the Fairchild estate would take well over an hour.

If he left too early, he'd miss the window. Too late, and it would be gone.

Jonah's face darkened slightly, but he didn't refuse.

"Alright. Wait for me."

As soon as he grabbed his coat and left, Vivian called the housekeeper over and instructed her to delay dinner by an hour.

The housekeeper looked confused. "But Dr. Granger just told me... we didn't need to prepare dinner tonight."

"He stepped out. I still need to eat."

Amara and Jonah walked in side-by-side, chatting and laughing brightly. The moment they spotted Vivian sitting on the sofa, the smiles vanished from their faces.

"Vivian..."

Vivian stared at them without a word, a mocking smile pasted on her face.

Amara fidgeted nervously. After an agonizing silence, she placed a takeout bag on the table. "This is the roast chicken Dr. Granger brought for you. We already had it warmed up at the restaurant down the street. You should eat it while it's hot."

"Is that right?"

Vivian didn't even glance at the bag, asking plainly, "If he bought it for me, why are you the one holding it?"

Her gaze drifted lazily between the two of them, the sarcasm dripping from her voice. "And what do you mean 'we' warmed it up? Who exactly is 'we'?"

"Well..." Amara twisted her fingers together, utterly at a loss for words.

Jonah gave Amara a pained, sympathetic look before his expression hardened as he turned to Vivian.

"Vivian, Amara was experiencing chest pains, so I ran a quick check on her. I didn't have time to tell you. I know I owe you an apology, but do you really have to be so unforgiving?"
