The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 154

Chapter 154

Charlie thanked her, narrowing his eyes to study Vivian.

“It/seems you’ve done your homework, Ms. Fairchild.”

“It’s a sign of sincerity.”

Vivian nodded humbly. “Since I’m asking you for an opportunity, it’s only right that I consider every detail. As for the final outcome… that’s entirely up to your discretion.”

“What exactly is your relationship with Zachary?”

“We don’t really have a relationship.”

Vivian knew the question was coming and answered frankly. “To be honest, I probably know less about Zachary than you do. He just owed me a favor from years ago.”

This surprised Charlie.

When Zachary had approached him-and when Charlie found out it was for a woman-his immediate assumption was that they were having an illicit affair.

But looking at Vivian’s calm demeanor now…

She didn’t seem to be lying.

Charlie smiled cryptically. “Trading a favor for just one dinner? Aren’t you worried you’ll end up empty-handed?”

“You don’t know me well, Mr. Beck. My motto is simple: do your best and leave the rest to

fate.”

She feigned a theatrical sigh of regret. “If things don’t work out, then God has other plans. Besides… sharing a meal with someone of your stature is a win in itself. Even if we don’t ink a deal, witnessing your class and refinement is a learning experience.”

Coming from her, the blatant flattery somehow didn’t feel repulsive.

“You have a way with words.”

Charlie let out a hearty laugh.

“I finally understand why Zachary thinks so highly of you. You can show me your proposal, but I can’t guarantee anything.”

A spark of joy flashed in Zoe’s eyes.

She quickly pulled the files from her bag and slid them across the table.

“Please take a look, Mr. Beck.”

Chapter 154

A few minutes later.

Charlie closed the folder and pushed it back toward Zoe without a word.

His mixed heritage gave him deeply set features, making his expression impossible to read. Was he impressed? Disappointed?

Before he could speak, the waiters began bringing out the food.

Charlie adjusted his napkin and smiled. “Why don’t we eat first? Let me taste the culinary delights Ms. Fairchild recommended.”

Zoe opened her mouth to speak, but Vivian discreetly shook her head.

They had him at the table; there was no need to badger him right now.

She systematically acted as a guide, gauging Charlie’s flavor preferences from his reactions and using the serving spoon to offer him the best cuts.

Through the glass, this scene looked surprisingly gentle and domestic.

“Mr. Sterling… is that your wife?”

“Is it just ‘looks like’?”

Through the window, Silas saw the woman’s attentive smile. Under the warm yellow lights, the sight was oddly grating.

He narrowed his predatory gaze. “Look into that man’s background.”

Simon took a moment of silence to pity Vivian. “Understood,”

The two men continued down the hall to a different private room.

Vivian was completely oblivious. After what seemed like a relaxed meal, she let out a secret sigh of relief.

Charlie was highly satisfied, especially amazed by her deep knowledge of the origin of each

dish.

“Are you from the Deep South as well, Ms. Fairchild?”

“Not at all.”

Vivian smiled. “I just wanted to show my utmost sincerity for this dinner. But please don’t feel pressured, Mr. Beck. This is merely my professional standard.”

The amusement in Charlie’s eyes deepened. He paused before saying, “I don’t think one meal is enough to fully understand your agency. Leave the materials with me. I’ll invite you to my office for a detailed discussion next time.”

In corporate speak, that meant they had a real shot.
