Chapter 147
Returning to The Manor, Vivian and Silas headed upstairs together.
She naturally trailed behind the man into the bedroom, only to smack right into a solid wall of muscle just past the doorway.
The man’s broad frame had turned around, squarely facing her.
“What is it?”
Vivian looked up at him, raising her hands in surrender. “I didn’t even do anything.”
“It’s exactly because you didn’t do anything that I’m growing more and more curious about you.” The dim lighting in the room cast dark shadows over the man’s eyes, making his gaze appear even more abyssal and bottomless.
He stared at the woman in front of him. “Judging by your performance at the hospital just now, you don’t seem afraid of crossing Grace Gifford at all.”
“Ah,” Vivian let out a soft exclamation. “I have you, don’t I? What do I have to be afraid of?”
“You think I’ll protect you?”
“You have to protect me.”
Vivian reached out and wrapped both arms tightly around his lean waist, her coquettish tone seemingly meant to melt right into his bones. “I’m your woman. If you don’t protect me, Grace could easily destroy me.”
She buried her face in his chest, but she could clearly feel his piercing gaze pouring down over her head-scrutinizing, probing, and so sharp it made it hard to breathe.
The man spoke in a hauntingly quiet voice, “I actually thought you had enough backing to go head-to-head with the Giffords on your own.”
It was a statement.
Which meant it wasn’t just a thought.
He already harbored deep suspicions.
Vivian gritted her teeth, rubbed her cheek against his chest, and murmured softly, “You are
my backing. Besides, if I don’t stand tall, it’s your reputation on the line.”
Silas frowned. Two seconds later, he peeled her hands away.
“It’s late. Go to sleep.”
“Together?”
“You want to?”

Silas let out a harsh, incredulous laugh.
He sat up abruptly, dragging the woman up along with him so she slid down to sit beside him.
His dark, bottomless eyes radiated sharp hostility. He glared at her, looking like a sleeping lion that had been awakened and was ready to tear someone to shreds.
“I would have thought a child raised by the Fairchild family would know at least a little about shame. Did Dominic Fairchild truly teach you nothing?”
“He didn’t.”
Honestly, he hadn’t taught her that at all.
Vivian offered a breezy smile. “Besides, no family teaches their daughters to stay away from
their own husbands.” She pointed to herself, then to him. “I’m perfectly legal.”
