The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 143

Chapter 143

“Silas.”

Chapter 143

She bit her lip. “You’re just angry with me, aren’t you?”

“Miss Gifford, I don’t think I have the free time to sit around and be angry with you.”

“…Silas, I’m apologizing to you, okay?” Grace’s voice carried a distinct tremor. Perhaps she truly was unwell, drawing out all her inner vulnerabilities.

“I didn’t reject you on purpose. I just thought… we’re both still so young. Don’t you still need to treat your eyes? And my career is just taking off. I don’t want to just date, get married, and live a life where I can see the end from the very beginning.”

Grace came from a privileged background. She had grown up surrounded by endless business marriages.

In their circles, how many people actually got to live for themselves?

Most of them followed their families’ arrangements, got married, had kids, and lived a life completely drained of hope.

She was her father’s spoiled darling, but the atmosphere in Silas’s family was notoriously rigid. If she casually married him, what would happen next?

Grace hadn’t dared to think that far ahead.

Silas remained silent, his deep gaze fixed on the distance.

The Manor’s grounds were exceptionally quiet at night, exuding a profound sense of isolation from the bustling world.

“Silas?”

He only spoke when the voice on the other end prompted him again.

“Since that’s the case, aren’t things exactly as you wished, Miss Gifford? Then you should go live your life.”

The response caught Grace completely off guard.

Did Silas mean…

He wanted to draw a clear line between them?

She bit her lip hard, her voice small and hurt. “You know that’s not what I meant.”

“I don’t know anything,” the man’s deep, resonant voice was beautifully cruel. “Miss Gifford, I assume you are an adult. Since you made a choice, you have to accept the consequences of

that choice. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. The world doesn’t work that way.”

“…”

“Enough.”

He had lost the patience to listen any further.

“If you’re sick, call an ambulance. If you don’t want to, then go to sleep. If all else fails, you have your manager and assistant.”

Grace’s eyes welled with unshed tears. Driven by sheer unwillingness to let go, she blurted out, “But what if the only person I want is you?”

Silas stayed silent for a moment, then abruptly ended the call.

He immediately dialed Simon Young.

“Grace says she’s running a high fever. Take a doctor to her place and get her checked out.”

Simon hadn’t expected his boss to assign him a task like this in the middle of the night. He blinked in confusion. “Mr. Sterling… I should go?”

“Who else? Me?”

“…No, no, no, I’ll go right away.”

Not daring to delay, Simon scrambled up to contact a doctor.

But he couldn’t help but feel a wave of confusion. Had Mr. Sterling really moved on from Miss Gifford?

It hadn’t been long at all, and he wasn’t even going to visit her when she was sick.

In the past, he would have undoubtedly escorted her to the hospital himself.

Simon clicked his tongue and shook his head. The new boss’s wife was truly something else. It seemed he’d need to pay much closer attention to Vivian’s orders from now on.

Unaware that his assistant had already sworn fealty to the new madam, Silas finished the call and returned to the bedroom. The woman was still sitting on the bed, hugging a pillow. Her puffed-up cheeks practically screamed ‘unsatisfied desires’.

His eyes flickered, and he headed straight for the door.

*Three, two, one.*

“Silas Sterling!”

Vivian’s indignant voice rang out behind him. “Your wife is still right here! Come back!”

Silas looked down and let out a soft chuckle, a hint of danger weaving through his smile.

He turned around, walked back with absolute precision, and stopped right in front of Vivian. Leaning down, he pinched her chin, his deep, intoxicating voice vibrating in the air. “How out of my mind do you think I’d have to be to marry a woman who does nothing but cause trouble? Hmm?”
