The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 475

A million curses screamed through Jocelyn's mind.

Was this "chance" really up to her?

Back when they were married, asking Adrian for a few thousand dollars earned her nothing but rolled eyes.

Five million?

He had to be joking.

If he had called Liam, Sarah, or Julian—she knew without a shadow of a doubt that any of them would pay the five million instantly.

But he just had to call Adrian.

This was practically a death sentence.

Jocelyn deliberately stalled for time.

She had no idea if anyone was coming to save her.

But every second she bought was a sliver of hope.

"You mentioned earlier that you have a daughter?"

The word 'daughter' seemed to strike a raw nerve.

And brought a shadow of deep sorrow over him.

"Yeah. But she'll probably be joining her mom soon."

It sounded like another miserable tragedy.

"Her mom died years ago. She's been with me ever since. Then last year, her heart started failing. I've drained every penny I have, and it's still not enough."

"Those bloodsucking doctors say she needs three or four more surgeries. It's going to cost hundreds of thousands. The imported meds barely get covered by insurance. The rest is all out of pocket. Damn it, the system is rigged."

Despite his vicious swearing, it was obvious the man loved his child.

Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone bankrupt trying to save her.

"So, you're doing this for your daughter?" Jocelyn asked.

"I had no choice. It's the only way to get fast cash, or my little girl dies."

"Have you considered the fact that if I die, you won't survive either?"

He spat on the concrete.

"Who gives a damn if I die?! As long as she lives! I've had enough of this miserable life anyway!"

Behind her back, Jocelyn was twisting her wrists relentlessly.

Unfortunately, the ropes were tied with brutal efficiency. She couldn't slip free.

To distract him from her movements, she kept the conversation going.

"How old is she?"

Honestly, immediate death might be the better option.

At this moment, Jocelyn wasn't afraid to die.

She was just entirely consumed by heartbreak.

Heartbreak for the baby inside her, who had to suffer alongside its mother.

And now, it had to die with her.

If she had known this would happen, she would have never kept the pregnancy.

The man approaching from the darkness was Adrian.

Under the feeble, flickering glow of a single solar work light, their faces were shrouded in shadows.

But Adrian's eyes pierced through the gloom, blazing with intensity.

He looked like a cornered, predatory wolf.

Jocelyn had never seen him look like this.

He truly had changed.

When Adrian saw Jocelyn teetering on the absolute edge of the abyss, his heart slammed violently against his ribs.

"I brought the money. Five million. Not a cent less."
