Julian stayed silent.
Quentin, observant as ever, gave him a knowing look. "Did you two have a fight?"
Julian's dark eyes flickered. "No."
Quentin chuckled, his tone laced with deeper meaning. "Glad to hear it. You young people need to think things through before you act. Don't let pride or impulse ruin something that's meant to last a lifetime."
That evening, Jocelyn and Nina ate the bland hospital cafeteria food. Nina didn't complain once, happily reading the copy of *Gone with the Wind* Jocelyn had bought for her. Jocelyn felt a mix of pity and pride. The girl was incredibly well-behaved—almost too well-behaved. She hadn't even whimpered when the nurses drew her blood. Her childhood innocence had been entirely stripped away, leaving behind a tragically mature little adult.
Jocelyn sat on the sofa, her laptop resting on her knees. She needed to be there for Nina, but she also had the upcoming design competition to prepare for.
Before she knew it, the clock hit 9:30 PM. Jocelyn had been completely absorbed in her work. She set the laptop aside, rolled her stiff shoulders, and stretched, only to realize Nina was dozing off with the book still in her hands.
Jocelyn couldn't help but smile. "Nina, it's time for bed."
Nina snapped her head up. "Sister."
"Yeah?"
"I want to read more books."
"Of course. When you finish this one, I'll buy you a whole stack."
Nina carefully placed a bookmark on her page, slipped the book under her pillow, and immediately scooted over to the very edge of the mattress. She was so tiny that her shifting cleared up more than enough space for another person.
"Sister, come sleep on the bed."
