"Because Julian is incredibly insightful and grounded," Penelope said gently. "He thinks ten steps ahead and looks at the big picture. When you're making major life decisions like this, his perspective could be really valuable."
Jocelyn felt a surge of irrational defensiveness. "You're talking like I'm a child making a reckless mistake. I know he's brilliant, but I'm perfectly capable of making my own choices."
Penelope paused, looking at her in surprise. "Jocelyn, did something happen between you two?"
Jocelyn quickly backpedaled. "No. Of course not."
"Normally, whenever I bring up Julian, you're always singing his praises. You're acting very defensive today."
"I'm not..."
"Are you sure?" Penelope gave her a knowing smile. "Because both of you are acting incredibly strange."
Jocelyn tried to play it cool. "I'm not acting strange at all."
"Then I guess it's just Julian."
Jocelyn's heart skipped a beat. "What did he do?"
Penelope dried the bowls and stacked them neatly. "He was the one who drove me here."
Jocelyn froze. Julian was here?
"He's parked down in the garage right now. I told him to come up, but he refused. He said he didn't want to smell the hospital disinfectants." Penelope shook her head. "I didn't even know he had a problem with the smell of hospitals."
Jocelyn stood there, completely paralyzed.
