In fact, she bore the monumental responsibility of making sure that man didn't say anything unhinged on camera.
God only knew if Nathan would decide to make some bold, public declaration of love on national television.
Nathan might not care about his reputation, but Nora definitely cared about hers. She was a naturally low-key person; being the center of a flashy, romantic spectacle was simply not in her DNA.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure you two get special VIP treatment behind the scenes, haha..."
Valerie was just joking, of course.
Given how heavily the state network was investing in this program, they were clearly planning to use it for a massive promotional campaign.
Valerie wouldn't even need to pull strings. The network would bend over backwards to accommodate every guest, ensuring a win-win for everyone involved.
Julia needed to get back to the precinct.
She sat for a few more minutes before saying her goodbyes.
Nora had assumed Valerie would stay, but to her surprise, Valerie stood up as well, looking slightly apologetic.
"Where are you off to?" Nora asked.
Valerie's eyes darted around the room, her posture suddenly awkward. "I, uh, I'm just gonna go for a walk."
Nora narrowed her eyes. "Are you really?"
"Ahem!"
Seeing that there was no fooling Nora, Valerie gave up and confessed. "Alright, fine! I'm going on a date."
"Julian Croft asked me out to the movies."
Seeing Valerie's uncharacteristically shy and flustered expression, Nora looked surprised. "It seems like you have a pretty good impression of Dr. Croft."
To agree to a movie date meant there was definitely mutual attraction.
"Well... I wouldn't say it's an amazingly good impression. Honestly, the guy is pretty clueless when it comes to romance."
"But as far as blind dates go... out of a hundred, I'd give him an eighty-five."
"If I had to rate him from dud to stud, he's a solid—"
Nora took his hand, letting him guide her down to sit on the edge of the bed.
"There's something off about this whole thing," he said.
"Hmm?"
Nora wasn't entirely sure which part he found strange.
"The initial background check on the victim seemed perfectly normal," Nathan explained.
He was a trucker who, after his eyesight began to fail, took a job sorting packages at a SwiftPost Pickup Station.
But digging deeper, the man's recent actions completely contradicted his established life history.
"Plus, if he was really on the verge of getting married to this woman, wouldn't the people around him have noticed something?"
"Did the woman's son even know about this?"
"Realistically, the chances of a man his age having a computer set up at home are low, which means he was probably communicating via smartphone. So why didn't the police uncover any digital footprint earlier?"
