The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 571

Nora Hayes got out of bed without a word and headed to the bathroom to wash up.

Nathan Peyton couldn't read her emotions from her back. He hesitated for a moment before following her.

Nora was squeezing toothpaste onto her brush when she jumped at the sight of Nathan poking his head through the doorway.

"What are you doing?"

Nathan's gaze landed on her face.

"Are you mad at me, Nora?"

A hint of anxiety flickered in his eyes. "Grandpa won't get the wrong idea. He's a very traditional guy, and what I said earlier was just a joke."

He knew she embarrassed easily.

Sometimes, his mouth just moved faster than his brain.

He was too embarrassed to admit that as their wedding drew closer, his restless anticipation was becoming impossible to suppress.

Just the thought of marrying her made his blood run hot.

The words had slipped out before he could catch them.

The only reason he hadn't completely lost his composure in front of her was through sheer, grueling willpower.

"It's fine."

Just as he understood her, Nora understood Nathan.

She knew he didn't mean any harm, he was probably just a little too eager. She shifted her gaze away, feeling slightly awkward. "You should go back to bed."

Relieved that she wasn't angry, Nathan was about to smile when her next words confused him. "Why?"

Nora coughed softly.

"Just go back."

He raised an eyebrow. Catching her sneaking glances at him out of the corner of his eye, a sudden realization hit him, and he looked down.

"Ahem."

Why hadn't anyone told him these hospital gowns were so sheer?

For a brief second earlier, he actually thought he'd lost control and reacted physically.

But somehow, this felt even more embarrassing than an involuntary reaction.

Noticing her discomfort, he didn't press, opting instead to enthusiastically introduce the spread of food.

Nathan headed to the bathroom to get ready.

When he emerged, he chuckled at the small mountain of food piled onto Nora's plate. "Grandpa, she can't eat all that. Stop giving her so much, it's just going to go to waste."

Realizing he had indeed gone overboard, Harold laughed. "It's fine, Nora. Whatever you can't finish, Nathan can eat."

Nathan was momentarily speechless.

Nora had thought the portions were huge too, but not wanting to reject the older man's kindness, she hadn't said anything.

Since Nathan brought it up, it saved her the trouble of figuring out what to do.

"This is more than enough for me. You should eat too, Grandpa. Nathan can only have oatmeal anyway. The doctor said he needs to stick to a bland diet."

"Is that so?"

Harold nodded. "Then we'll enjoy all of this."

He slid a bowl of plain oatmeal across the table. "You eat this."
