Realizing what he had just blurted out, Nathan broke into a violent coughing fit.
"N-no, wait, that's not what I meant..."
He frantically tried to backpedal, but the coughing aggravated his injuries. The color drained from his face as a sheen of cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
"Nathan!"
Nora rushed over to support him. "Are you okay? I'm calling a doctor!"
She reached for the call button.
He grabbed her wrist, stopping her instantly.
"Don't..."
If the doctor came and asked what happened, what was he supposed to say?
That he flirted too hard and hurt himself?
He would never live it down!
He firmly pulled her hand away from the button. "I'm fine. I just choked on my own spit."
Seeing that his breathing was finally evening out, she let out a sigh of relief.
"Look at you, you're hurt and you're still..."
Her voice trailed off as his earlier proposition replayed in her mind.
They might be getting married soon, but the idea of helping him shower was enough to set her on fire.
Sure, she had seen countless naked bodies on the autopsy table, but work was work, and life was life.
Her professionalism meant she never viewed the deceased with anything other than absolute clinical detachment.
But Nathan was entirely different.
He was the man she loved.
Just the thought of him completely bare in front of her made her cheeks burn.
Nathan watched the blush bloom across her face, and his heart did a sudden, chaotic flip in his chest.
"I wish time would move faster."
His quiet murmur broke the silence of the hospital room.
He was definitely corrupting her.
How else could she explain these deeply inappropriate thoughts?
She took a few deep breaths, trying to cool off.
But underneath the heavy scent of hospital antiseptic, the bedsheets were steeped in the faint, crisp scent of cedar.
The combination only amplified his presence, making her flush even harder.
Stop overthinking!
She mentally berated herself.
Still, the exhaustion of the day soon caught up with her, and her eyelids grew unbearably heavy.
Surrounded by his scent, it felt as though she were securely wrapped in his arms. She stopped fighting it, relaxed her body, and drifted off to sleep.
When Nathan finally emerged, she was completely out.
Seeing her sleep so peacefully, a soft smile touched his lips.
He walked over silently, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her face, but the harsh buzz of his phone on the nightstand shattered the quiet.
