"Someone turned themselves in?"
Nora stood up in disbelief, exchanging a quick look with Nathan. She immediately put the phone on speaker so he could hear the conversation.
"Yes."
"He ingested Paraquat right before walking in. The poison took effect the moment he confessed. We rushed him to the hospital, but he didn't make it."
"Paraquat?!"
What kind of twisted determination drove someone to drink a poison like that!
It was leaving absolutely no way out.
He had turned himself in with the sole intention of dying.
"Did he say why?"
"And how exactly did he tamper with my car?"
Nora couldn't understand it. Even if he confessed to tampering with the car, the most he would face under the law was an attempted murder charge.
With a good lawyer, he might have even gotten a reduced sentence.
He wouldn't have been in prison for life.
If he wasn't afraid of dying from Paraquat, was he really afraid of jail time?
What possible reason forced him to drink it?
"He said he couldn't stand you. He claimed that people like you, who dissect corpses, deserve to die."
"He said your autopsy work violates human decency and ethics, and that you'll definitely rot in hell when you die."
Judging by her colleague's tone, the suspect's actual words were likely much more vile.
Her face darkened, her emotions shifting violently behind her eyes.
"Have you confirmed his identity?"
Seeing her silence, Nathan stepped in and asked the question.
The colleague on the line wasn't surprised that Nathan was with Nora.
There were even horrific cases of children drinking it out of anger at their parents.
Incidents like that became so common that strict regulations were quickly put in place.
Yet despite the ban, some people still managed to acquire it through the black market.
"So now that he's dead, the trail runs cold?"
A lonely man with no family or friends, claiming he tampered with her car out of spite.
And then committing suicide by drinking Paraquat to avoid punishment.
While bizarre, it wasn't entirely implausible.
The problem was, if he had the means to get Paraquat and kill himself with it, why resort to tampering with her car as his method of revenge?
For someone like him, wouldn't direct poisoning have been the fastest method?
It would have fit his accusations against her far better, too.
In his eyes, the best retribution for a 'monster' who cut people open would be an agonizing death where her own organs rotted away from poison, right?
