Watching them act so intimately right in front of him, Aaron felt like his lungs were going to explode.

"Nora!"

He was about to scream, 'What do you take me for?', but a single, freezing glare from Nora choked the words back down his throat.

It belatedly hit him that he had absolutely no right to say those words anymore.

The other officers in the precinct were busy with their own tasks, ignoring the tense standoff between the three of them.

But in Aaron's mind, they were all Nathan and Nora's colleagues. They would obviously take Nathan's side.

It made him feel like there were needles pricking his back.

He felt like a clown stripped naked in the middle of a crowd, left for everyone to mock and judge.

"You'll regret this."

Aaron threw out the hollow threat and turned to leave.

As he passed Nathan, a surge of spite made him violently ram his shoulder into the detective.

But how could a soft, out-of-shape doctor compete with a battle-hardened police captain?

Nathan didn't even flinch. Aaron bounced right off him, stumbling several steps backward.

Utterly humiliated, Aaron didn't even dare to look around at the invisible eyes he felt staring at him.

Nora felt second-hand embarrassment.

She turned her head away, refusing to look at him.

Her dismissal fueled the inferno in Aaron's chest, but knowing he couldn't win here, he let out a cold scoff and stormed out.

Mia rolled her eyes. "What, were you hoping I'd die?"

"No! Of course not!" Aaron scrambled to correct himself.

"I just didn't expect you to look so amazing after surgery. I'm so sorry, Mia. The police had me locked up, otherwise, I would have been right here by your side."

Mia thought about how Lindsay had set her up with The Artisan. The man's techniques were extraordinary; she felt totally revitalized.

If she hadn't rushed him out to avoid getting caught by her family, Aaron might have actually run into him.

Despite her infidelity, she felt absolutely zero guilt. She patted Aaron's cheek with a satisfied smirk. "It's sweet that you thought of me. I assumed we were just business partners now."

Panic gripped Aaron's chest.

Mia was his only ticket to the top. Remembering what he had almost lost, he lowered his eyes, his tone dropping into a pathetic, desperate plea. "How could you say that? Mia, I've always loved you. I promise, from now on, you're the only woman in my eyes. Let's just make this work, okay?"
