Cecilia’s POV

“You wanted to see me?” I asked, confused.

Caden’s smile made me uneasy, but I stood my ground, trying not to look as nervous as I felt. Something about him always made me uneasy. I never saw him around the palace, other than that one dinner a few weeks ago.

“You ran off so quickly yesterday, and I wanted to make sure you were okay,” he said. “Did my brother do something to upset you?”

“King Leopold?” I asked. “Why would you think it had anything to do with him?”

The corner of Caden’s lips lifted, making my stomach knot.

“His scent was all over you,” Caden safd, making my heart stop in my chest.

I internally cursed myself; of course, he could smell him on me.

“Your secret is safe with me,” he continued when I didn’t say anything. “But I must warn you to be careful. Leopold is known to break hearts, and I would hate to see you hurting again.”

My cheeks felt hot, and I found it hard to look him in the eyes.

“My relationship with the King is just an arrangement. I’m not naive enough to forget my place,” I tell him, trying to keep the pain out of my voice.

“Caden,” a voice said from nearby, drawing our attention away from one another. Landon stepped forward; his eyes trained on Caden and his lips pressed in a thin line. I could see the disapproval in his eyes before he even spoke. “What are you doing in front of the ballroom? Weren’t you heading to the border with your men?”

“I was just on my way there,” Caden said, his eyes never leaving mine. “Just wanted to make sure my brother’s favored concubine was well.”

“You should get going. Wouldn’t want to keep the gammas waiting.” Landon’s voice was rougher than I had ever heard it.

But Caden didn’t seem to think anything of it.

“Of course,” Caden said, finally pulling his eyes away from mine to look at Landon. “Wouldn’t want that.”

With that, he walked away without looking back.

“Cecilia, I must advise you to be very careful around Caden,” Landon said, surprising me.

I blinked up at him, confused.

“What? Why?” I asked, my interest suddenly piqued.

“Just take my word for it,” Landon said, his eyes narrowing. “It’s better if you don’t get caught up with him.”

I frowned.

“If you can’t give me a good enough reason, Landon. Then, I will have to ignore your warning.”

I had no intention of seeking Caden out, but I wasn’t going to be told who I can and can’t speak to without a justified reason. My whole life, I was always told what to do and what to say.

He’s had a difficult childhood,” Landon said, shaking his head at the thought. “After their mother, Queen Elenora, died, their father, King Charles, focused most of his attention on Leopold. He was the eldest son and was being groomed to take over the throne. It was like he had forgotten he had another son.
