Then, he exhaled softly.
“Well,” he murmured. “That was enlightening.”
He stepped out from the shadows of the trees, walking slowly toward the clearing she had just left behind
The ground still showed signs of disturbance.
Boot prints.
A scuff in the dirt where someone had shifted their weight. And the faint impression of two people standing far too close together. The corner of Caden’s lips twitched in amusement.
She carried his scent. It was no mystery who she was, just with.
King Leopold… sneaking off with one of his concubines. A low chuckle escaped from his lips as he shook his head.
He continued down the path and towards the palace entrance.
“Caden?” A voice said the moment he stepped inside.
“Landon,” he greeted, his voice lacking emotion.
“What are you doing out here so late?” There was an accusatory tone to Landon that Caden didn’t like. He was never Landon’s favorite person. That role would always belong to the precious King.
No matter what Caden did, it was always wrong in Landon’s eyes. It was obvious that he didn’t trust him.
“Can’t I go for a late-night stroll around my own home?” Caden asked, his eyes narrowed. “I didn’t realize I was under house arrest.”
“You know that’s not what I meant,” Landon said, exasperated. “You have an early schedule tomorrow, and you need to get rest.”
“Last I checked, you weren’t my father,” Caden murmured.
“I’ve known you since you were born,” Landon reminded him. “I also know how you get when you’re overly tired. Get back to your room and sleep, Caden.”
Caden’s top lip curved slightly, and his eyes narrowed.
“I’d watch who you order around, Landon. Don’t forget your place.”
Landon stepped back, his eyes widening slightly. He was used to Caden’s attitude, but something seemed different… angrier.
Landon didn’t bother replying as Caden turned and started up the stairwell that led to his room. He could hear Landon’s retreating footsteps behind him, but he didn’t turn around to ensure that he was actually walking away.
Caden didn’t get far before he heard some familiar voices around the corner of the second floor.
“Cecilia, wait. What’s going on? You look devastated…” A girl said, her voice filled with worry.
“I can’t talk about it,” Cecilia said, a sob escaping her lips. “I’m sorry, Cora. I need to get back to my room.”
“You know you can trust me, right?” the girl, Cora, said before Cecilia could rush off. “Whatever it is… I hope you know you can talk to me.”
Cecilia let out a small sniffle, and when Caden peeked around the corner, he saw her standing there, wiping tears off her cheeks. Cora was staring at her with a worried expression, and her eyes looked moist, as if she wanted to cry as well.
