Chapter 8
Leopold’s POV
There is undoubtedly something strange going on with my new handservant.
For months, I’ve ignored the dull ache in my shoulder. Between my rigorous training regimen and the fighting I’ve done in actual battles year-round, it’s become easy to overlook any specific pain. Everything hurts, more or less, all the time.
But now, all of a sudden, a new slave that I’ve never even seen before arrives at the palace and immediately is able to tell that there’s an unhealed injury in my right shoulder?
Something is different about her.
It’s not as if I had no idea that I might be wounded somewhere, or that there was a certain way that my other slaves had performed my dressing that wasn’t right. Every time I had to be changed, I’d come out of a stupor to find another dead handservant on the floor.
Obviously, something they had been doing was sending my wolf into a frenzy. I just hadn’t figured out what it could be yet.
This new girl, however, managed to identify the location of the injury, avoid it, and finally get me the treatment that I needed.
On her first day here.
There are a couple explanations running through my mind, neither of which seem very plausible.
The first is that she is secretly a skilled doctor herself- and it’s highly unlikely for an Omega slave to have that kind of advanced medical experience.
The second is that she can somehow communicate with my wolf, or at least sense its emotional state accurately enough to single out my shoulder injury as the catalyst of its anger.
I know I’ve just told Landon that I want to find my True Mate, but suddenly, i am apprehensive.
If she really is hearing my wolf’s voice, can it be that my True Mate is nothing but a Omega slave? Pure royal blood flows through my veins, and this girl comes from the lowest class of our people.
I stare at her, unsure if I want to even know the answer to my question. But I have to ask anyway.
“How did you know about my shoulder injury?”
Cecilia’s POV
I freeze, my heart pounding.
I search his face for a clue as to what he’s thinking by directing this question at me, but the Alpha King’s stony expression is unyielding of any answers for me right now.
Maybe he suspects that I can hear his wolf’s voice. Or maybe he’s just confused by my odd behavior.
It’s not like I’d had a choice. I had to think quickly in order to save my own life back there. Otherwise, I would’ve surely touched the wound in the king’s shoulder and suffered the same fate as Lucy and the rest of them.
But I also don’t want this whole situation to get any more coftiplicated than it needs to. *
My one goal when I arrives at the palace was simple: survive long enough to get rotated out of service, then return home and uncover the truth about my father’s relationship to Diana and the real story of how my mother died.
I have to remind myself of my purpose here, or I may find myself in even greater trouble with the Alpha King. His inability to communicate with his own wolf makes him unpredictable already, and admitting what I’ve discovered might set him off again.
I can’t risk him knowing that I suspect the secret he’s hiding about him and his wolf.
