Chapter 7
Leopold nods. “A while age, yes, What’s the matter with it?”
“Well, it seems you’ve got some deep tissue damage that hasn’t healed properly. Were all the pieces of the arrow removed?”
The Alpha King looks away and shrugs defensively. “I did it myself.”
The doctor sighs. “There very well may be a piece that’s still embedded in your shoulder. It’s causing some stiffness and inflammation, but it’s on its way to becoming an ulcerated wound.”
Leopold’s gaze remains blank.
“That means infection,” the doctor explains. “Removing the foreign object and cleaning the area is minimally invasive. If I have your permission, I can do that now.”
“It looks fine to me,” the king replies. He seems a bit put out by this, as if he’s embarrassed to not have known.
“It looks fine from the outside,” Doctor Bromley says. “And even then, a practiced eye can spot some irritation below the surface.”
He pauses before adding, “Your body must has sustained quite a few injuries on a regular basis during the wars and trainings over the past several years. It’s actually not shocking that you didn’t notice this one in particular, considering the amount of trauma in the surrounding region.”
Leopold huffs. “No one else noticed it, either.”
For the first time, I really catch a glimpse of the apprehension in the doctor’s countenance, and realize that even this practiced professional must fear for his life around the king.
“Treat it now,” Leopold commands.
As Doctor Bromley takes his tools out and gets to work, I feel myself getting queasy and have to avert my gaze. I look instead at the king’s face. His expression is firm, aside from the occasional twinge of discomfort.
I listen closely for the other voice, and catch a relieving murmur: Shoulder feels better…
Suddenly, the Alpha King looks up, and his eyes lock with mine. I almost gasp but hold myself back. The king’s eyes are blue and fierce, but behind that, there’s a deep, profound pain obscured in darkness.
“This shouldn’t take too long to heal. A week, to be generous,” the doctor says, startling me. “You will need to apply this topical medicine daily, and redress the wound when you do to avoid infection.”
Leopold, without breaking his eye contact with me, says, “Cecilia will do it.”
The doctor glances between the two of us uncertainly. “That should be fine. Just be careful.”
“Leave us,” the king orders.
