Chapter 77

His eyes flickered towards the door and then back at me.

“Don’t like it. Angry with Leopold.”

I let out a breath, a small smile tipping the corner of my lips.

“Don’t be. It’s my own fault. I was the one who snuck out and nearly got myself killed,” I tell him. “I’m just hoping that he will lift this damn punishment off me soon because if I can’t go outside, I might lose my mind.”

“Come outside.”

His request felt more like an order than a suggestion. I raised my brows.

“I can’t. I told you, I’m grounded,” I reminded him.

He nodded slowly.

“But I am King.”

I sighed.

“Yes, but if Leopold catches wind that we snuck out and went outside after he grounded me, I will be in even more trouble.”

Warren pressed his lips together, and he stared at a spot on the ground for an impossibly long time. His jaw clenched and unclenched, and it made my chest tighten.

“You sneak out with Jax… but you won’t sneak out with me?” His words came out sharp, and I blinked, confused by them.

“What?”

He turned to look at me, and then I realized exactly what was lingering in his eyes. It was something I knew far too much of. It was pain.

“You snuck out with Jax. You went to your pack with him,” he told me, his tone almost accusatory. “But you won’t sneak out with me.”

“I just don’t want to make things worse for me,” I tell him. “You have to understand—”

“I understand you went to him for help… but not me.”

His words made me pause.

“Warren…” I started to say, but he stood up.

“You wanted to leave the palace,” he said, his voice growing louder. “But instead of coming to me… You went to him. I thought we were friends.”

“We are, Warren–”

“But you didn’t come to me,” he said, turning to look at me.

There was no mistaking the pain in his eyes now, the tension in his shoulders. The way his voice cracked slightly at the end. I had hurt him, and my heart broke at the sight and sound of it.

It wasn’t my intention, of course. But it was the outcome.

I wondered whether Leopold felt the same way, which was why he grounded me. As quickly as that thought came to me, I brushed it away because, of course, he didn’t. He was Leopold for crying out loud. There was no way he was jealous of Jax.

I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts.

“Why him?” He asked, his brows pulling together.

I stared at hitn for a long while, neither of us saying anything. I wasn’t sure what to say.

“I can’t answer that,” I finally say, because I have no answer.

Warren stared at me for a moment before he turned and stormed out of my room, saying nothing more.

I flinched when the door slammed.

I stared at the door for a long time, willing him to return so we could talk about things. I didn’t want to lose Warren… he was my friend. Truth be told, he was my best friend. I hated the thought of him being upset or hurt because of my actions. It was never my intention.

The sun began to rise, its light filtering through the room, casting shadows along the walls and floors. I thought Mike would have been back outside my room by now, but I was surprised that he wasn’t there when I opened the door.

I needed to find Warren and explain to him why I went to Jax instead of him, not that I knew the answer to that myself. But I had to fix this. I didn’t want him to think I didn’t value our friendship.

I couldn’t just wait for Mike to return; this had to be now, before Leopold woke up, and I lost my chance to speak to Warren until tonight.
