“The King grounded me,” said, letting out a breath. “Because I disguised myself as a maid and went back to my pack.”
Anna frowned as she turned to face me.
“Why would you do that?”
It wasn’t accusatory, just curious.
“I needed to find out answers about my mother’s death. My father wasn’t being truthful, and I know he knows more than he’s saying. Recent events have proved that I can’t trust him. Now, I need to figure out which parts of my life were real and which weren’t. I have a feeling he lied about a lot more than my mother’s death.”
“As the King’s favored concubine, I’m sure it looked bad that you snuck out the way you did,” she said, raising her brows.
“Hence why I’m grounded,” I murmur.
“I’m sorry that happened,” she said, frowning. “Well, try to get some rest and eat the food I brought you. Maybe tomorrow he will be in a better mood and let you off the hook.”
I wasn’t going to hold my breath, but I nodded anyway. Without another word, she left my room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
The next morning, I got up fairly early and got dressed. I wasn’t surprised when I saw Mike standing outside my door, a small smile on his face.
“Good morning,” he said to me, bowing his head slightly.
“Have you been out here all night?”
“No, I switched off with someone so I could get a few hours of sleep. I just returned a few minutes ago. Good timing, I guess,” he said.
I nodded; we stood there awkwardly for a moment, the silence stretching between us.
“I have to go to etiquette training,” I tell him.
He nodded.
“Yes, and I’ll be escorting you there,” he tells me.
I let out a breath.
I should have known he was going to take me to the lessons. I didn’t argue with him, though; I knew it was pointless to do so.
I walked down to my lessons with him trailing at a distance behind me. I will give it to him, for a moment, I almost forgot he was there. When I reached the ballroom, some of the other concubines were already there. I was a bit early, but I’d rather be early than late again. At least this time I was able to dress properly.
Vivian, of course, was already there. She was speaking to one of her friends, another concubine, Elara. They were giggling about something, and then when they saw me, a smirk appeared on Vivian’s face as she folded her arms across her chest.
“Didn’t think you’d be here,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “I thought you were too busy being grounded.”
The way she said the word “grounded” was filled with mockery. Some of the others started to giggle at that, and I felt my cheeks warming.
I wasn’t sure how she knew about my punishment, but I wasn’t going to let her make me look like a fool in front of everybody.
“Don’t you have anything better to do than gossip about me and my business?” I asked, my own eyes narrowing.
