The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70

Cecilia’s POV

The estate gates looked exactly the way I remembered.

Tall iron bars, the pack crest etched into the metal, guards standing in their usual positions with their spears and their hard eyes. The kind of guards who had watched me grow up and would have bowed their heads when I passed

Now I was standing a few yards away with my head covered, dressed in coarse fabric, my hands folded neatly, as I belonged to the servants. I wasn’t here as Cecilia, Alpha’s daughter. I was here as Cecilia, palace slave.

My stomach twisted.

jax leaned closer, his voice low.

“Head down,” he reminded me. “NO eye contact. Walk like you have somewhefe to be.”

I nodded once, trying to steady my rapid beating heart and trembling hands. However, it was a futile attempt because the closer we got, the more my heart pounded, and my hands trembled.

Every step felt like I was walking into a trap.

The guards barely looked at us as we approached. Jax spoke smoothly, as he belonged. I guess in some ways he did belong, this was his home at one point, too.

“Delivering palace kitchen help,” he said, sounding bored. “Orders from the Alpha.”

The guard’s eyes narrowed; his gaze flickered to me for a moment. I lowered my head, trying to hide my face from view

Just when I thought he was going to recognize me, he turned his gaze back to Jax. He nodded towards the gate, and just like that, it opened, allowing us entry.

The familiar sense of home filled me the moment we were through the gates. Though this place never really treated me like I belonged, it was still my home.

We moved quickly down the stone path; Jax didn’t slow. He didn’t give anyone a chance to examine me too closely. It my identity were blown, it would only be a matter of time before my father got word of my arrival.

The servant’s entrance to the kitchen was on the outside of the main housk, near the servants’ quarters.

“This is as far as I can take you,” Jax said, standing outside the door.

I knew he couldn’t come in with me because it would look suspicious. I nodded and gave him a small smile

“Thank you, Jax,” I said to him.

He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, but then he closed it and nodded.

“Yeah, anytime, Cecilia.”

I didn’t wait for him to leave. I quickly hurried through the doors of the servants’ quarters. I ran my hands down the rough skirt feeling uncomfortable. The room smelled like old straw, cheap perfume, and desperation. It made me want to gag

Beds lined the walls; not an inkling of privacy between them. Some slaves were occupying the space. They were thin and had dirty skin, making my stomach tighten. I hated knowing that it was my father who was treating them like this.

And yet, despite their poor living conditions, they still seemed to be making the most out of it. They were braiding hair, fetching water, sewing clothes, and making blankets.

The moment I walked in, though, several pairs of eyes turned in my direction and stayed. I was frozen in place when I saw the recognition in most of their faces. One woman in particular, one I recognized as Gloria, the head servant, stood.

“Cecilia What are you doing here? We heard you were sent to the palace to be a slave,” Gloria said, walking around her bed to get closer to me, as it her eyes were playing tricks on her

“You’ve heard correctly, tell her “But they sent me back to help in the kitchen.

Gloria frowned.

“That’s strange, I hadn’t heard of any events taking place recently that would require an extra servant. Is it just you they sent lor?”

“Yes, they haven’t said anything to me either,” I told her, lifting one shoulder.

“It’s just strange that they’d send for you,” Gloria said, narrowing her eyes. “Do you know who gave the order?”

“My father,” I said without hesitation. “I’m sure it’s so he can humiliate me.”
