Chapter 69

Jax

He got me these medical records which means he can probably get me back to my pack, too. He did offer as much originally anyway But would he still do me any favors if he knew I was never going to want him in that kind of way?

I had to try. He might be my only hope of finding these answers.

I paused once I reached the doorway, I promised King Leopold that I would stay away from Jax and other men.

“Important,” Lora reminded me, and I knew she was right; this was too important. I was about to leave, but Lora’s voice stopped me. “Get dressed first.”

I stared down at my sleep clothes, and my cheeks warmed.

“Oh, right,” I murmured.

I dressed quickly: I put on a simple dress with no jewelry and pulled my hair back into a bun. I wasn’t really expecting to see anyone other than Jax, so I didn’t worry much about appearance.

Once I was dressed, I slipped out of my room and went on my search for Jax.

Though it wasn’t very hard to find him, he was near the outer training courtyard, speaking quietly with one of the other guards. They were on night patrol this evening, it seemed, and though the sun wasn’t set fully, Jax was in position

Whatever he had said to the other guard made him throw his head back in laughter. Jax had always had a good sense of humor, so it didn’t surprise me that he brought this same energy to his job, too.

When his gaze lifted and locked onto mine, his eyes widened.

“Cecilia,” He asked, his brows furrowing. “What are you doing here?”

“I need your help,” I tell him. “I know we left things off kind of weird, but I think you’re the only one who can help me, fax”

He looked at the guard he was with and said, “I’ll be right back.”

The guy nodded his head once before turning away, and Jax, without hesitation, took hold of my hand and pulled me away I fought to not pull my hand out of his; now was not the time.

“What’s going on?” Jax asked once we were far enough away.

This time, I did pull my hand away because he hadn’t done it automatically.

“I need to get back to my pack,” I told him. “I need to find out more about my mother, and I can’t do that here”

Jax raised his brows.

“And you’re asking for my help? Not the King?” Jax asked, folding his arms across his chest, unable to hide the bitterness in his

voice.

“He can’t know about this,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “Please, Jax. If you care about me, you’ll help me ”

I was playing with fire.

“And what makes you think I can help you?”

“Because,” I said, the corner of my lips lifting. “You got me the medical records, you can get me back to my pack. It anyone can accomplish the impossible… It’s you.”

Inside the estate, Diana sat near the window, sipping tea lazily

Across from her, Sophie was adiniring her reflection in a silver mirror, adjusting the fall of her hair

“You’ll enter the palace soon,” Diana said calmly. “At the very least, you’ll secure a place as one of the King’s concubines”

“At the very least,” Sophie echoed, smiling faintly. “But I don’t intend to remain a concubine ”

Diana chuckled.

“That’s my girl.”

A servant approached hesitantly.

“Madam…. there was word from the city,” she said, her eyes remaining on the ground.
