Chapter 51
“I’m not,” I assured him, keeping my voice steadier than I felt. “It’s the truth.”
“Nobody can communicate with my wolf. He’s a wild beast that cannot be tamed…. noteyen by me,” he said sharply, and then he pressed his lips together so quickly that I would have missed it if I blinked.
It was like he was trying to cut himself off before he said another word… like he hadn’t meant to reveal that information. But I already knew that he couldn’t control or communicate with his wolf. Warren had told me himself that he had never been able to get through to Leopold because of the curse the witch cast on him at birth.
I knew Leopold had bits and pieces of memory from the times that Warren took over his body and killed all those people… but most of the time, Leopold has been kept in the dark.
“He’s not a wild beast… he’s only trying to protect you,” I said in a rush, suddenly feeling the urge to protect Warren.
“Protect me?” Leopold scoffed, disbelief clear in the question as he shook his head. “How is killing my slaves protecting me? I have a reputation as a killer, and it’s all because of him. Worst part is… I don’t even remember half the victims I’ve slaughtered in cold blood.”
His tone was dark, but I could hear the vulnerability behind his words. There was a desperate intensity to understand why he was the way that he was, and the strange sense of guilt clung to my chest. I had some of the answers that he sought, but I’ve kept them to myself out of fear of what he would do once he found out.
“Those you have killed were after something from you that your wolf wasn’t willing to give… some of them triggered him. Some of them hurt him and you without you even knowing about it,” I explained. “Violence was the only way he could respond to those things.”
“Bullshit,” Leopold spat, making me flinch. “He’s a murderous and vindictive wolf that’ll kill anyone who looks at him the wrong way. He can’t be trusted… I can’t be trusted. And yet… sometrow…” his voice trailed off as his eyes met mine, a question in
them.
“He hasn’t killed me,” I finished his sentence; I refused to look away from him. I needed him to see that I was telling the truth.
“Why hasn’t he killed you?” Leopold asked, his words coming out as a snarl.
“Because I am not a threat,” I tell him as honestly as I can. “He was threatened by those he killed. He thought they wanted to harm you. Can you truly tell me that everyone you have killed was saintly and in your best interest? You can’t think of one reason why Warren would want them dead?”
“You don’t know anything about what my wolf wants,” Leopold hissed.
He was angry… but he wasn’t about to lose control as he’s done so many times in the past. I wasn’t even sure if that’s registered with him.
