The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36

My cheeks heated, and I stared down at the gorgeous porcelain plate in front of me.

“Jassy, that’s so rude,” Cora said, swatting her arm and chuckling. “Maybe don’t pry to her business… even though we are all dying to know how she did it.”

“You two are ridiculous,” Claira said, rolling her eyes. “Don’t mind them, honestly. You don’t need to answer any of their follow -up questions. It’s none of our business.”

“I’m not his only concubine,” I told them, confused. “Most of these women are his… are they not?”

They all looked at one another, frowning.

“Well, yes…” Claira said, her eyes finding mine. “But he didn’t choose any of us. Landon did. You’re the first one he’s actually chosen for himself.”

My eyes widened at that. I looked around the gardens for a moment, my eyes finding each of the other gorgeous concubines that occupied the space. They were all in their own little bubbles, chatting and laughing with one another. Occasionally, some of them would look in my direction, and their eyes would narrow.

I could see the bitterness on their faces, and my chest tightened.

Is that why most of them didn’t like me?

I was about to voice the question aloud when Claira spoke again.

“Not all of us are like them,” she said softly, leaning towards me and dropping her voice to a whisper. “Vivian has a way of manipulating people.”

“We don’t buy into palace gossip,” Cora said, leaning back in her seat. “Honestly, I can’t wait to leave this place.”

I raised my brows.

“You can’t?”

“All three of us at least can’t wait,” Jasmine said, her eyes shifting to her plate in front of us.

“All we really want is to return to our packs and then one day meet our true mates,” Cora explained thoughtfully.

“This is nothing more than a job to us,” Claira added. “We don’t take it as seriously as some of the others, like Vivian. They are all about getting the King to notice them and want them… but honestly, he never does. He’s never touched any of us. We exist around him, doing what we are told. We were promised money once he finds his true mate, and then we will be allowed to return home.”

“I want to find my mate so bad,” Jasmine sighed. “But it’ll have to wait until the King meets his.”

I stared around at the three girls, my heart feeling heavy in my chest. They all had forlorn expressions as they thought about their futures, and I realized there was so much more to these girls than I thought. Sure, Vivian manipulated some of them, and maybe even some of them wanted to get on Leopold’s good side, but they were still women who only really desired true love

Some maids arrived shortly after, bearing tea and scones for each table. They ruined themselves by filling each of our cups and leaving a plate of sweets in the middle of the tables.

“Thank you,” I said to the maid who filled my cup.

She looked at me, surprised for a moment, as if nobody had ever thanked her before. She nodded wordlessly and scurried away with the other maids.
