Chapter 297

cilia’s POV

The yelling came from downstairs.

I already knew what was happening; Sophia and I got into some cookies that were left on the counter, She said her. mom wouldn’t mind if we had some. Diana wasn’t really nice to me; she always looked at me like I disappointed her. But I knew how much she loved Sophia, so if Sophia said it was okay, then I trusted her.

When Sophia reached for a cookie, she accidentally knocked the entire plate over, shattering it on the ground. She told me to hide in my room, and she would take the fall. But I heard Diana yelling my name; the anger in her voice was evident.

I was terrified, especially when I heard my father’s angry footsteps.

“Where is that ungrateful little brat??” Diana hissed through her teeth. “Make her pay for what she did.” “Cecilia, get your ass downstairs!” My father growled; his Alpha aura washed over me, but it barely made me flinch like it would with the others in the pack.

I scrambled to my feet; his tone was growly, which meant his wolf was on the edge. I wasn’t sure what it was about his wolf, but he terrified me. He was worse than my father when he was in control; most wolves want to protect their pup… but not his. His wolf enjoyed my torment and wanted me to feel every ounce of pain he could inflict on me.

With my father and Diana this angry with me, I feared what would happen if they found me. I had no idea where Sophia was or what she had said to them, but I knew it couldn’t have been in my favor if they were coming after

me like this.

Without thought, I scrambled out of bed, wiping my tear-stained cheeks with the back of my hand. I hurried out of my room, shutting the door behind me so they’d think I was still there.

I ran down the hallway and entered the forbidden corridor. The corridor my father had made clear was off limits to everybody, including me. This was the corridor that once housed my mother; she lived in this wing up until the day she died.

Her bedroom was at the end of the hallway, next to her private bathroom and her study. Not to my father’s knowledge, I sometimes go to her bedroom. It’s been untouched for years, and there’s a scent in the room that makes me wonder if it belongs to my mother. I might not have known her, but it felt like I was close to her whenever I was in this room.

If she was alive… I wondered if she would protect me from my father? I wondered if Diana would hang around as

much.

I shut the door behind me, sealing me in with the memory of my mother. Her pictures were hung up on the wall; pictures I was told she painted. They were gorgeous watercolors, and they made my chest tighten.

What was she thinking about when she painted each piece?

There was one painting in particular that drew me in the most; it was a portrait of a man with dark eyes and dark hair, rugged and handsome in an older way. His gaze seemed to follow me, and I wondered what stories he might hold, adding layers to my curiosity about her art and her thoughts when she painted him.

It wasn’t a portrait that was hung up on the walls for all to see; it was in her sketchbook.

A book I had found in her closet when I was hiding at one point.

Her closet was one of my favorite places to hide; that’s the place that smelled the most like her. At least, I think it s her that I smelled. Her clothing surrounded me; things that she touched and wore. It made me feel a sense of warmth deep in my belly.

I could hear my father’s heavy footsteps on the stairs just outside the door, and I found myself hiding even further in the closet, my back against the wall and my knees pressed to my chest. My trembling hands were covering my ears, hating how he spoke about me like I was nothing more that a nuisance he was forced to raise.

Tears burned in my eyes, and I had to close my eyes to decompress and gather my thoughts. My foot pressed down on a loose floorboard, making my eyes open.
