Chapter 291
cilia’s POV

The only thing running through my mind was the fact that it could have been me. It should have been me. Only if it were me… it wouldn’t just lose my life… I would have lost my pup’s life as well.
My hands immediately went to my belly; if this wasn’t an act that was on purpose, it was careless. That flower was banned from palace grounds for a reason, and someone had brought it here, slipping it into my tea.
It was only proof that me and this baby weren’t safe here and I needed to get out of here. My heart was racing by the time I returned to my room; I didn’t want to be in this room. I wanted to be in this hospital unit where I could get updates about Claira and make sure she was truly okay.
I was genuinely so worried for my friend.
I hated that she was there because of me… or because of the carelessness of a palace worker.
I paced the length of my room; agitated. Lora had retreated into the furthest corner of my mind; sleeping and not making a sound. But I knew if she were to surface, she would be fighting for answers and demanding to know who could be so reckless and put us in danger like this.
I stared around the room for a long while; this wasn’t me. This wasn’t the life I ever thought I would live. I was feeling uneasy to the point where I thought I was going to get sick.
A knock on the door drew my attention away from the room.
“Cecilia?” I heard my name being called on the other side of the door and I immiedalty let out a breath. I knew that voice, and I was relieved to hear it.
I rushed to the door, pulling it open only to find Jax standing on the other side.
He gave me a boyish smile.
“Cecilia, I heard about what happened. I’ve been worried. Are you okay?” He asked, stepping into my room without being invited.
I frowned at that, but I didn’t say anything as I shut the door.
“It should have been me, Jax. She was only trying a sip of the tea… it was meant for me,” I told him, tears flooding
my eyes.
Without warning, Jax stepped closer to me and wrapped his arms around me, holding me close. I wasn’t a fan of the affection he was showing me, but I didn’t fight him on it either because, truth be told, I needed a hug after everything that’s happened this morning.
“Hey… don’t think like that. If it were you… you would have died. You know you are deathly allergic,” he reminded me. “Claira will be fine.”
Something about Jax’s scent made my brows draw together. It was different; it was his normal scent but mixed with something oddly familiar. He most likely felt me take a deep breath because, for a moment, he stiffened.
“Jax… have you been with someone?” I asked, peeking up at him with a frown.
His eyes widened, and he let out a breathy laugh.
“What? No, of course not,” he said, running his hands through his hair as he stepped away from me, giving me some space. “You know you’re the only one I want.”

He clamped his lips shut as if he hadn’t meant to say that out loud, and then he cleared his throat.
Besides, I’m way too busy trying to keep you safe to be with anyone else,” he added, giving a small and kind of awkward laugh.
In hindsight, it didn’t matter if Jax was with someone else or not. But I didn’t want him playing with anyone else’s feelings.
“I’m not safe here,” I tell him, changing the subject. “I could have died tonight.”
My baby could have died tonight; they can mess with me, but they cannot mess with this baby. That was where put my foot down.
Just then, the door swung open, and I spun around to face Leopold. He let out a deep and guttural growl when he spotted Jax in my room.
“Alpha King…” Jax said, bowing his head slightly. “I-”
“Get out.”
Leopold didn’t let Jax finish his sentence; his words were a command, and Jax couldn’t refuse an Alpha command.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” he said. He turned to look at me for a moment, his eyes softening, and I could see the worry in them. “Come find me later. We can finish our conversation.”
“She won’t be coming to find you,” Leopold said through his teeth. “She has other matters to deal with.”
Jax swallowed, but he knew better than to argue with the king.
He just numbly nodded his head and walked out of my room, shutting the door behind him. I looked up at Leopold with a frown.
“Has there been any news on Claira’s condition?” I asked.
It’s been a little over an hour since I’ve been in the hospital unit, and I was about to go crazy if I didn’t know what was happening with her soon. He stepped closer to me; his eyes dark and penetrating, rooting me to the ground.
“Why was Jax in your room?”
My frown deepened.
“Is that really important right now?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest.
“Answer the question, Cecilia.”
“He was just checking on me. He heard what happened and-”
“It’s highly inappropriate for my concubine to be alone with another man in her bedroom,” Leopold said through his teeth.
I was shocked by his audacity.
“And it’s fine for you to be marrying another woman?” I asked, raising my brows, daring him to say something.
“It’s different.”
“How is that different?” I all but shouted.
“Because I am the King!” He roared, his eyes practically black.

I wasn’t afraid of him though; I knew deep down that he would never hurt me.
Can we not talk about this right now?” I asked, defeated and exhausted. “I just need to know about Claira.”
“Claira isn’t my concern right now. You are.”
I pressed my lips together.
“Claira was the one who had the allergic reaction and ended up in the hospital… not me,” I reminded him.
