Chapter 272

That was the moment I realized my father didn’t love me.

“Cecilia…”

I startled awake; the memory of my past still clinging to my mind from the nightmare I had. It’s been a while since I’ve had a nightmare like that, but they used to happen way more often. It was a sore memory… a memory I thought was a misunderstanding on Sophia’s part.

She had apologized to me for that many times, telling me she tripped over her own feet and was in so much pam that she couldn’t tell them what had actually happened. My father never apologized, though, and neither had Diana. In fact, that wasn’t the only time he had locked me in that closet as punishment.

It became a normal thing in our home.

Sophia cried, I got blamed, and then I got punished.

I didn’t realize the manipulation that Sophia had over my family and me until recently. Now I felt stupid for believing her all these years, for thinking they were just misunderstandings and that she was sorry.

She had always been plotting my downfall, and now I was paying for it.

“Cecilia…” I heard my name again; this time it was a little louder, and I realized that it wasn’t a part of my dream.

I looked over at the cage doors and frowned at the dark, needle-like silhouette that stood before me. The small window above my head cascaded with the moonlight over his face, and my heart stopped in my chest.

Leopold.

I sat up, rubbing my tired eyes.

“Are you okay?” He asked, his voice nothing more than a whisper, and when I got a better look at him, seeing the gold glimmering in his eyes, I realized that it wasn’t Leopold

“Warren…” I whispered.

He looked so concerned that my chest tightened as I sat up.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him.

“Did you really think I was just going to leave you in here? Leopold is an idiot for sending you here, and if I could communicate with him, I would tell him just that,” Warren said, shaking his head. “I’m going to break you out of / here.”

He lifted his hand, revealing the keys, and I shook my head.

“It would only make things worse, Warren. I must stay here until Leopold says otherwise.”

His frown deepened.

“I’m not going to leave you here, Cecilia. This isn’t a place for you.”

“I have no other choice,” I told him. “If I escape, it will only make me look guilty. I’m not guilty, Warren. I didn’t touch her despite how it looks.”

“I know,” he said, surprising me.

Telinked.

“You do?”

He nodded.

“Of course,” he said without a moment of hesitation. “I know you, Cecilia. You would never hurt anybody. Please … come with me. I can help you and-”

“There are others here who are sleeping. If they hear you, it’ll start rumors,” I warned him, thinking about Monica and Robert, both of whom I could hear snoring. It would only be a matter of time before they woke up, though. “And if Leopold finds out that I escaped, it would be the end for me. I must stay here. At least for tonight.”/

I wasn’t going to tell him that I was planning for my own escape soon enough, mainly because I had no idea how I would escape.

“Cecilia…” he started to say.

“Please,” I said, interrupting him. “Don’t make things harder for me. If you care about me at all, you’ll go.”

He was quiet, and I could see the war waning in his eyes. After a moment, he let out his breath and stepped away from the cage.

“If that’s what you want… then I will leave. But I’m not giving up. We are going to prove your innocence and get you out of here,” he assured me. “You have my word.”

And then he turned and ran off, leaving me alone once again.
