I started to walk back towards the palace without looking at him, a part of me hoping he would choose to walk with me.

When I heard his footsteps, hurried and sure, right behind me, the corner of my lips curved.

Third Person POV

“Well, that was juicy,” Anna thought as she stepped out of the shrubbery she was hiding behind.

When Diana released her from the dungeons, she wasn’t expecting to run into something so scandalous during her walk through the forest, and yet she could barely contain her excitement.

She was heading back to her home pack to retrieve a special heirloom… or at least find it… It would take her a few days’ time to reach that pack on foot, and she wasn’t even sure where to start looking for something that had been missing for years.

Diana had claimed that she had stopped looking for this heirloom years ago because she wasn’t truly sure if it actually existed or not. But Alpha William had just confirmed its existence while he was drunk, and now she was more determined to find it.

With Alpha William away from the pack for a few days, Diana felt it would be easy for Anna to start her search.

But what she wasn’t expecting was to find Cecilia and Leopold making out against a tree.

Anna doubted Sophia was aware of the little affair that was going on between the two of them, and she couldn’t wait to be the one to break the news to her.

This was way more scandalous than she ever anticipated.

Without a thought, she turned and headed back towards the palace already knowing that Sophia was in the gardens. Anna had the pleasure of running into Lady Sophia on her way out. Sophia was shocked to see her, and Anna cursed herself for being careless in her escape after promising Diana that she would leave undetected.

Sophia had been looking for King Leopold at the time; her expression was a bit pale, and her eyes were moist with unshed tears and aggravation.

“What are you doing here?” Sophia had asked her with a frown, marring her lips. “Shouldn’t you be locked away in the dungeons?”

“Your mother released me,” Anna said without thought; she cursed herself again for speaking so candidly.

To Anna’s surprise, Sophia merely laughed.

“And what’s the catch?” Sophia asked. “Surely she didn’t release you out of the goodness of her heart.”

Anna’s cheeks warmed.

“No, My Lady. Of course not,” Anna murmured. “I am to find something for her. Something she’s been searching for.”

Understanding crossed Sophia’s expression at that moment.

“She’s sending you to find the heirloom,” she said, and it wasn’t a question. “Which means she knows with Certainty of its existence. Of course, she does. Mother always found things out in her own time. Well, I won’t keep you. You should go before someone else spots you. I’d be more careful in her escape though.”

Anna nodded and was about to walk around her towards the unwatched gates, but then she paused.

“May I ask if everything is alright, My Lady?” She asked, frowning. “You look unwell.”

Sophia pressed her lips together, masking her emotions.

“I’m perfectly fine; why wouldn’t I be? It’ll be my wedding day soon enough, and I’ll be the happiest woman in the world,” Sophia said, though Anna had no idea who she was trying to convince.

“I meant no disrespect,” Anna said just as she turned to leave.

“I’m just looking for the King,” Sophia blurted from behind her. “So, if you spot him, tell him his fiancé needs him.”

Anna froze for a moment; the King was missing?

Wasn’t right now the wedding rehearsal? She’d been hearing the guards speak about it for the last several hours, and Diana came to her dressed elegantly. Anna assumed that’s where she was coming from.

“Of course,” Anna said, and then she walked off towards the forest, where she did, in fact, spot the King… though he was far from alone.

Thankfully, by the time the King and Cecilia had wandered off in a different direction, Sophia was still in the gardens, looking ready to walk away.

“Lady Sophia!” Anna called out, breathless from running.
