Chapter 238

cilia’s POV

The walk to the infirmary felt like a lifetime.

Every fiber of my being wanted to run in the opposite direction and keep ignoring the obvious signs that something was wrong with me… with my wolf. The fact that she couldn’t shift scared me more than I wanted to admit.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to stick around after Jewel adjusted my dress, a dress I don’t think I should be wearing in the first place.

Who wears an off-white dress to someone else’s wedding?

Even if the dress was gorgeous, I knew that it would only draw unwanted attention from everyone around me. Especially Sophia.

The clinic sat in its own section of the palace, further away from everything else. It was a lot bigger than it appeared from just the oak door. I hadn’t been here yet, but I’ve been told it’s pretty much an entire hospital fit for a King.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as I grabbed the knob and pulled the door open, my eyes widening when I stepped into a large waiting room. It felt like I stepped through a portal and was suddenly in an entirely different place. There were even windows and a door that led into the courtyard area, overlooking the capital, and a road for commoners to travel.

I made my way towards the front desk, where a plump woman sat. She had curly white hair tied up with a pretty pink flower and wore light pink scrubs. But most importantly, she had a kind face and warm, inviting brown eyes.

Her head was down as she rummaged through some files on the desk, her tongue sticking to her top lip as she concentrated.

My movement must have drawn her attention because as I approached the desk, her eyes shifted upward and landed on me. They widened as she set her sights on me, and she immediately stood to her feet, forgetting whatever it was she was working on.

“Miss Cecilia, it’s good to see you,” she said, bowing her head slightly

I blinked, confused.

I was certain I had never met her before.

“You know me?” I asked, frowning.

“I make it a habit to know everybody important to the King,” she tells me. “I’m Victoria, the head healer. Please, pardon the mess, Miss. I wasn’t expecting any royal visits this evening.”

My cheeks warmed.

“I’m not a royal,” I correct. “And there’s no need to apologize. You seem busy.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. I have a few interesting cases I am working on, but it’s nothing that can’t be handled. And you are considered a royal in my eyes. As I said, you are important to the King.”

She seemed so certain with herself, and I wished I could be as certain as she was. But I wasn’t. Because I knew the truth.

I wasn’t important to him at all.

there something I can help you with? I’m sure you aren’t just here for a social visit,” Victoria said, studying my face.

I nodded.

“Uh, yes,” I start. “Actually, something has been off… and I was hoping for an examination to get some answers.”

She frowned.

“I’m going to need a bit more details than that, love,” she tells me. “What do you mean by ‘off?””

I swallowed.

“I mean, I uh…” I pause for a moment, gathering my thoughts. “I’m unable to shift.”

I lower my voice at that last part, as if I didn’t want the ghosts in the waiting room to hear me.

“Oh my. That does seem serious. When did you notice that happening?”

“It started only recently, I believe,” I tell her, sucking my bottom lip into my mouth. “It was the first time I tried to shift in a while, so I’m not entirely sure the timeline.”

“Has anything else been going on?” She asked. “Any other strange occurrences or symptoms?”

She grabbed a pen and a clipboard as she jotted down some notes.

“My wolf has been acting strange as well,” I confess.

She paused and glanced up at me.

“Stranger than not being able to shift?”

I nodded.

“I can usually control her a lot better. But she’s been aggressive. She’s also been quiet… so much so that it’s hard for me to get a proper read on her. I’ve almost lost control of her not too long ago, and that’s also never happened before.”

Her frown deepened.

“That’s odd,” she said as she jotted that down on the clipboard. After a moment, she looked back up at me. “How about you come with me, and we will get you situated in the bay.”
