suppose I don’t need to tell you that this stays between us,” I tell her, my eyes narrowing.

She lifted her gaze to meet mine, and then she nodded.

“Of course,” she said, her voice dropping below a whisper.

I nodded as well.

“Good,” I murmured. “Once you are sent back to your pack, you’ll be given extra compensation… for your… time.”

My meaning wasn’t lost on her; I was paying her for having sex with me. I wished I could take back my words the second they left my mouth because Cecilia looked as if I had just slapped her. I am pretty much treating her like a call girl, and her eyes had gone wide as pain flashed through them.

“That won’t be necessary,” she said, her voice tight like she was trying hard not to cry.

“I assure you, it is,” I tell her flatly, pressing my lips together.

She swallowed, and I couldn’t help but stare at her throat as it worked to keep the bile down, no doubt. I could practically hear her heartbreak at that moment, but wasn’t this what she wanted? I didn’t understand why she

was so upset.

She turned on her heel and quickly left my room, shutting the door behind her.

I let out a frustrated breath as I ran my fingers through my hair.

Later in the evening, I went to check on Sophia in her room. I didn’t stay long, though, and told her that I had a lot of work to do before our upcoming wedding.

“You’ve been gone since yesterday. I thought we would spend some time together as mates,” she said, pouting as I tried to leave her room.

“We will,” I assured her. “But for now, I have some business to take care of.”

She leaned in, expecting a kiss. We hadn’t kissed yet, and honestly, I had no desire to kiss her. Instead, I patted her on the head. Her eyes flew open, and she stared at me, dumbfounded.

“Get some more rest. Your ankle is still swollen.”

“Aren’t you going to punish her?” Sophia asked, making me freeze at the doorway once again. My back was to her this time, but I could feel her closeness behind me. “She hurt your future queen, and yet nothing has been done about it.”

“There isn’t enough evidence to prove that she hurt you. There were no witnesses,” I told her, which was the 1 truth.

“You don’t believe me?”

“I didn’t say that,” I tell her. “But until there’s proof, I believe in fairness, and I’m not going to convict her for something we aren’t sure she did.”

Sophai’s mouth fell open, but I didn’t stick around to hear her complain about my decision. I left her room and started towards my study, only to be stopped by a familiar and irritating voice.

I froze for a moment and then turned to find Jax standing nearby. I didn’t bother saying anything; Jax knew how I elt about him, and he’s been trying to keep his distance from me for a while.

“What is it?” I asked through my teeth, trying to keep my annoyance at bay.

He swallowed; his Adam’s apple bobbed from the action.

“I wanted to speak with you about Cecilia…”

More irritation bubbled inside of me. I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Spit it out then,” I muttered. “What about her?”

“You are releasing the concubines after your wedding next week, is that correct?” Jax asked. When I didn’t say anything, he continued. “I wanted to know if it was all right if I took Cecilia away. It would mean that I would resign as a gamma for the palace. I want to protect Cecilia, and her pack isn’t safe… not for her at least. As you know, I have deep feelings for Cecilia and-”

“You aren’t taking her anywhere,” I snapped, fury boiling through me. “If you try, I will kill you, Jax. Don’t test me.”

I started to walk away.

“Do you mean to say you are going to keep her prisoner here?” Jax asked from a distance. “You promised her she could go home.”

I paused for a moment, and then I slowly turned back to face him.
