Chapter 177
Cecilia’s POV
Jax’s warning earlier had sat with me for most of the night, so when I saw Anna standing at my door with a tray of food, I knew something had to be off.
Madam Isa had said someone would bring food to our rooms, and I had a feeling it would be Anna I would see tonight. She brought me some soup, a small bowl of veggies, and another bowl of mixed fruit. But as I stared down at the soup, my stomach rolled with nausea.
I put my hand on my belly, feeling a tightness there.
It was like my body was warning me that I shouldn’t eat that soup. I lifted the spoon for a moment, examining it. It didn’t smell or look like anything was off, but that didn’t mean anything.
In my pack, Moonshade plants grew wild, and when mixed correctly, they could create an odorless, colorless poison. I’ve seen my father use it when he eliminates enemies.
Since being here, I hadn’t seen any Moonshade plants around, but considering my father, Diana, and Sophia were here, I wouldn’t put it past them to bring it here. But would my father really try to kill me?
The thought made my stomach tighten with unease, and I swallowed down the pain that stuck to my throat.
I heard movement outside my door, and I realized Anna was probably returning to check on me… maybe to see if I was still alive. I did the only thing I could think to do, and I dropped the soup on the ground, letting it spill out and the spoon clatter beside it.
I fell back on my bed, making my breathing as ragged as possible and closing my eyes to make it look like I had passed out.
Just as I thought it would, my door opened.
I could hear the light footsteps as Anna walked into the room, shutting the door softly behind her. I knew the moment she spotted the soup because she paused for a moment before she continued toward my bed.
I felt her movements; they were subtle, but I knew she was assessing me. The way my chest manually rose and fell, how raspy my breathing was. How unnatural my position on my bed was. She reached over to check my pulse, an odd instinct for her to have.
If she thought something was wrong, she should have gone to get help immediately. But instead, she was taking her time to assess my body to see how long it would take for me to die.
My suspicions were right; she had done something to the soup, and she returned only 10 minutes later to see if it had done its job.
Without thought, I opened my eyes, and I watched the confusion in hers for a moment when she saw that I was now awake. My hand shot out, and I wrapped it around her throat, stopping her from getting any closer and trapping her.
Her eyes grew larger as she realized what was happening, and then I saw the pure panic on her face.
“What did you do to the soup?” I asked her as I sat up, my eyes turning into angry slits.
Lora was on edge; she was furious,” and if I didn’t reel her in, she would take control without a doubt. I’m not sure I’d be able to hold her back if that were to happen.
“Please…” Anna croaked, her breathing cut off.
I loosened my hold on her neck, but I kept my other hand firmly around her wrist, keeping her in place.
“Tell me the truth. What did you do to the soup?” I demanded to know, my voice rising slightly.
“Moonshade…” she said in a raspy whisper.
