“Of course they hadn’t, “Sophia said, rolling her eyes. “I don’t even think they know it yet. I’m not sure the specifics, but I know what I saw with my own eyes.”

“What is it you saw, Mistress?”

Sophia looked around to make sure nobody was nearby; when she saw that the coast was clear, she leaned in close to whisper into Anna’s ear.

“I saw the King mark her during the ceremony.”

Anna gasped and covered her mouth, her eyes wide.

Sophia pulled back.

“Which is why we need to get rid of that bitch once and for all,” Sophia said, folding her arms across her chest.

“What do you suggest doing?”

Sophia reached into the breast of her dress and pulled out a small vial of clear liquid, making Anna’s eyes widen even more. “Moonshade,” Sophia said, a slow grin spreading across her face. “The deadliest poison for werewolves. You say you’re about to bring her a meal… well, you’re going to slip this into it.”

Anna’s heart was pounding against her chest; it was one thing to be a spy for Sophia… but this was actual murder. This wasn’t something Anna was comfortable with, even if she felt that Cecilia deserved it.

Seeing the hesitancy on her face, Sophia continued.

“But don’t worry; once the deed is done, I will hire someone to take care of her body, so your prints aren’t on her. You have my word that you won’t get in trouble for this.”

“I’m not sure this is a good idea…” Anna said, her eyes never leaving the vial. “What if I get caught?”

“You won’t,” Sophia said, stepping even closer. “It’s not an option. A couple of drops is all that’s required. And once you deliver the food to her, you can leave.

Anna opened her mouth to protest once again, but Sophia gripped her wrist and shoved the poison in her hand.

“Have you forgotten what her mother did to your mother??” Sophia hissed her eyes narrowing. “If you want to avenge your mother and then gain your freedom from the pack… You will do this, Anna.”

Anna’s heart cracked slightly at the reminder of why she was doing all of this.

Her mother.

“You’re right,” Anna said softly. “I’m sorry for my hesitancy. I won’t let you down.”

Without another word, she turned and started towards the kitchen, where a few other slaves were collecting meals for certain concubines.

One of the kitchen workers grabbed a tray and covered it, shoving it into Anna’s small frame.

“About time you showed up,” she muttered. “Get a move on. The King’s favored concubine cannot wait any longer!”

Anna nodded and hurried out of the kitchen with the tray of food.

Once she made it around the corner, she paused so she could open the top of the tray and place a few drops of the poison into the soup. Moonshade was often colorless and odorless, so Cecilia shouldn’t detect it.

Anna took a deep breath before knocking on Cecilia’s bedroom door.

“Came in,” Cecilia called from the other side.

When she stepped into her rooni, she saw Cecilia seated on her bed, a frown marring her lips.

“What brings you here at this hour?” Cecilia asked, her eyes never leaving Anna’s face

“I was told to bring you a meal,” Anna said as she set the tray on the bedside table. “It’s just a simple dish the kitchen whipped up.”

Cecilia’s frown deepened as she studied the tray once Anna uncovered it.

“It smells good,” Cecilia commented, though it seemed her mind was elsewhere.

“You need to keep up your strength… for both you and the baby,” Anna said. “Here… have some.”

Anna picked up the spoon, but Cecilia snatched it from her.
