Chapter 168

It was the Alpha that had beenstaring at rio from across the room; only this time, his Luna wasn’t standing by his side.

The corner of his thin lips curved into a smile that made me feel even more unsettled.

“You must be Cecilia,” he surprised me by saying. “I’ve heard quite a bit about you.”

My first instinct was to call him out for speaking with me when his Luna was somewhere nearby, but I knew I couldn’t be rude to the guests at this ball, no matter how badly I wanted to be.

“Good things, I hope,” I said, trying to keep my voice light.

His eyes crinkled at the corners.

“That depends on who you ask,” he said, his tone shifting into something else. “You have certainly made a name for yourself.”

I raised my brows.

“Have I?”

“The King’s favored concubine,” the Alpha said, his eyes darkening slightly. “It makes a man wonder what makes you so special.”

I tried my best to keep a calm composure.

“Must be my intelligence and winning personality,” I say, trying to keep the mood light.

The Alpha let out a bark of laughter, catching the attention of some others around us.

“Perhaps you are right,” the Alpha said, stepping closer to me and effectively crowding my space. “Though I must say, I am very interested in finding out about this winning personality of yours.”

At that moment, my eyes caught sight of something behind him. My father and Diana were both glaring at me, my father with his lips pressed together, creating a thin line, and Diana with her arms folded across her chest.

“If you’ll excuse me,” I said as I stepped around the Alpha.

“Taking off so soon?” He called after me. “But we were just getting started.”

“Please, accept my apology, Alpha-” I trailed off, realizing I had no idea what his name was.

He filled in the blanks before the silence stretched any further.

“Benedict,” he replied, bowing his head slightly.

“Alpha Benedict,” I finished.

With that said, I walked towards my father and Diana, my heart going a million miles per hour.

“Are you trying to embarrass this family?” My father seethed, his eyes narrowing.

I frowned, not knowing what he was talking about.

“Nobody here knows you are my father,” I tell him, my voice coming out much more bitter than I intended. I promised myself that I wasn’t going to lose my cool… not here… not now.

“It doesn’t matter; they know you are from my pack,” he growled. “You look ridiculous.”

“Are you trying to make yourself look desperate?” Diana asked, raising her brows. “I mean… wearing the same dress as Sophia? Isn’t that beneath you?”

“Itwasn’t intentional,” I said evenly.

“Of course it wasn’t,” Diana replied, her tone dripping with disbelief. “You just happened to choose the same gown. What an unfortunate coincidence. Fortunately, Sophia pulls it off way better than you do.”

My father scoffed.

“You always had a habit of overreaching,” he said. “Trying to place yourself where you don’t belong.”

Something in my chest shifted, and Lora squirmed uneasily, I thought maybe it was the mixture between the full moon, my father’s and Diana’s accusations, and my short talk with Alpha Benedict. But it almost felt like the wind had gotten knocked out

of me.

“You shouldn’t be here in the first place,” my father continued, his eyes narrowing. “You don’t belong at this ball.”

A part of me snapped at his comment, and I found myself lifting my head to look at him directly in the eyes.

“You’re right. I shouldn’t be here in the first place. I’m only here because you lied and got me sent here. It should be Sophia who is here, and I should be back at our pack. But these are the cards I’ve been dealt, and you have nobody to blame but yourselves.”
