“I’m not the one you need to convince,” he tells me.
And then he turned and left the study, leaving me alone and feeling more vulnerable than ever.
Time seemed to stand still as I sat in the study went from sitting in one of the chairs in front of Leopold’s desk to sitting on the couch on the far side of the room near the bookshelves. I paced the room more times than I could count, and I was suddenly feeling as though Leopold was never going to show up.
I thought about the banquet… how he chose to speak to Sophia over me. Sophia looked disheveled after their meeting, and she implied that something had happened between them and that it would happen again after the banquet.
The thought made me sick to my stomach because I swallowed it. I knew what this was from the beginning; he was trying to find his mate, and I couldn’t stand in the way of that.
Though I was highly doubting that Sophia was his mate.
The door opened without warning, and I spun around to face Leopold, who stood in the doorway, his eyes trained on me and his expression unreadable. My first instinct was to deny what had happened because it wasn’t the truth. I needed him to know that I’m not the kind of person who would attack another for no reason.
But I didn’t get the chance, because he was talking before I could.
“What were you thinking?” He asked, his tone deep and his eyes narrowing. “Causing a scene in the middle of the banquet… in front of all those people. Did you truly think that was appropriate, Cecilia?”
I held his gaze, though my chest tightened slightly. His words were like a slap in the face; it was clear he believed that I was that kind of person, and that hurt more than anything.
“I didn’t do what they are excusing,” I say, trying to keep my voice even.
“There were witnesses…”
“Witnesses who were lying,” I told him. “Why would I try to hurt that girl? I don’t even know her.”
“Jealousy makes people do crazy things,” he said, folding his arms across his chest.
My heart stopped in my chest.
“You think I’m jealous?”
“Aren’t you?” He asked, his tone sharp and accusatory. “We shared a moment the other night-”
“A moment?” I asked, interrupting him. “That’s what you’re calling it?”
My heart ached.
“We both know what it was, Cecilia. And we both know what this is,” Leopold said, his tone softening slightly, almost like he was afraid others would hear. “I am here to find my mate. It’s the only way I…”
His voice trailed off, and he let out a breath, stopping himself from saying what he was about to say.
“I can’t give you special treatment,” he finally decided to say.
“I’m not asking you to,” I tell him. “I would never expect that.”
I admit that it hurt when he didn’t choose me to speak to before the ceremony banquet, but I would be naive to think he’d give
me special treatment. We were both silent for a moment longer, not sure what more to say.
“We don’t have to talk about it, you know,” I tell him, my voice barely above a whisper. “The kiss, I mean.”
