Chapter 140

Cecilia’s POV
Madam Isa’s words stayed with me long after she had spoken them. The room was completely silent, but I felt exposed, my chest tightening with vulnerability.
To them, I was nothing more than an Omega. I didn’t deserve to wear this kind of linen. I didn’t even deserve to be considered a potential consort. And yet, I was already being treated like royalty, like the King had chosen me for himself.
The thought made my chest expand, and I was surprised when I felt Lora’s approval from deep inside, a rare moment of connection that both comforted and terrified me. She didn’t hate the idea of belonging to the King, and that terrified me more than anything.
She carefully handed the linen to one of her assistants. She gave them specific directions, and they nodded, getting to work right away. One of them started to take measurements, and I felt like I was some prop.
They poked and prodded until there was nothing left, and by the time the fitting ended, the room felt suffocating.
The girls whispered in low voices as they gathered their things, their glances flicking toward me when they thought I wouldn’t
notice.
I didn’t stay long.
Not even when Jasmine, Claira, and Cora tried to reassure me that it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. I knew they were only trying to be nice. But Madam Isa basically put a target on my back. I didn’t deserve to wear the royal linens or get special treatment. Like all the other women in this lounge, he’s not going to choose me.
He will find his fated mate and choose her. If not her… then one of the more deserving Alpha’s daughters.
I had to remember that this was only a performance, and then it would be over. Tomorrow was my last day in this palace, and I needed to clear my head.
The moment Madam Isa dismissed us, I slipped into the corridor.
I needed to get away from everything and everyone before I lost my mind, craving a place where I could breathe freely without feeling eyes watching and judging me.
The hallway was quieter, the distant hum of the palace carrying faintly through the walls. I walked without direction at first, just letting my feet take me where they wanted.
“Cecilia?”
My steps stopped.
Sophia stood only a few feet away; I was so lost in thought that I hadn’t even noticed her there. I was relieved to see she was by herself; maybe I could get some actual answers from her about what the hell she was thinking and what was going on.
Her posture was relaxed, her expression composed, but there was something in her eyes that hadn’t been there before. Something sharp and deliberate.
“I was hoping I’d be able to get a moment alone with you,” she said, stepping towards me.
“It seems you’ve found me,” I said, trying to keep my tone even.
The corner of her lips curves as her eyes pierce through me.
“It seems I have,” she agreed. “I have to say, I was a little surprised to see you with the other concubines, Cecilia. I didn’t think you’d resort to becoming the King’s whore. Weren’t you only here to be a slave? That’s rather embarrassing, don’t you think?” “You know why I’m here, Sophia,” I told her, my eyes narrowing. “So, how about you explain to me how you could let them

take me?”
I ignored her jab about being the King’s whore, because if I thought too hard about it, I would spiral.
