I saw the gamma warrior looking up from what they were doing, and their eyes found me almost immediately. Some of them whispered as they smirked in my direction, making my cheeks burn. I wasn’t sure why I suddenly felt embarrassed, but I found it hard to look at any of them. Especially with the way they were looking at me.

I felt uneasy in their presence.

“Pay them no mind,” Landon murmured as if he could read my thoughts. “It’s very rare they see a woman on the training grounds, but the King is insisting that you learn defense so you can better protect yourself.”

Before I could say a word in response, my eyes found his, and it felt like time had stopped entirely. He was in the middle of sparring with a Gamma, and the thin layer of sweat on his back drew me in to all his taught muscles and sculpted features.

How was it possible for one man to be that good-looking?

I found myself staring at him for far longer than I should have, and Landon had to clear his throat to get my attention.

“It’s better if you tread lightly, Cecilia.”

His warning caught me off guard, but I didn’t have time to analyze it before I heard Leopold’s voice, pulling my attention away from Landon.

“About time you showed up,” he said as he approached. “We need to get started if there’s any chance at training you before the consort ceremony.”

I frowned.

“I will leave you to it,” Landon said. “If you need anything, you know where to find me,” he added for Leopold, who nodded in

return.

Once he was gone, Leopold turned to me.

“Let’s go,” he said, grabbing my arm and pulling me along with him. “We are going to train on the other side of the grounds, so we will have some privacy. Plus, it’ll be good to be near the forest line.”

“Got your concubine training with the big boys?” Caden taunted from his side of the field, mischief in his eyes.

Something about his voice made me uneasy, even more so than before. When I met his eyes, there was something familiar in them I couldn’t figure out. He gave me a wink, which deepened my frown, and then he turned and continued training with the other gammas.

Leopold’s grip on my arm tightened slightly. It wasn’t enough to hurt, but it was enough to keep me in life out of fear that it would start to hurt soon. He pulled me further away until we were practically in the nearby forest.

“Let’s get started,” he said, turning to look at me. “I’m going to teach you basic defense so you won’t be so helpless if you were to get yourself kidnapped again.”

My mouth gaped open.

“Are you really saying that it was my fault I got kidnapped?”

“I’m saying you were gullible and made reckless decisions that caused things to escalate worse than they were,” he said, narrowing his eyes at me.

My heart stopped in my chest.

I had to stop myself from calling him a series of choice words.

“Sorry, next time I see a note from a friend, I will ignore it,” I said, folding my arms across my chest.
