Chapter 106

Cecilia’s POV

“No no no no,” Warren kept murmuring, his eyes barely focusing.

He was pacing back and forth in the room; the chains had been completely torn from his arms and lay scattered on the ground in

a pile. He kept running his fingers through his hair and tugging at the ends like he was in agony.

He wouldn’t look at me, but I knew he was upset over what happened.

“Stupid, stupid,” he kept repeating.

“Warren… I’m okay. Please stop,” I told him, trying to keep my voice as calm as possible. “You need to calm down.”

“Hurt hurt… hurt her,” he said, his voice coming out strained.

“Warren… please,” I said, trying to get through to him. “Let Leopold take control again. It’ll be okay.”

He ran his fingers through his hair and tugged at the ends again before he practically collapsed to the ground. His body was trembling, and he was trying hard to keep his face from being seen…. but I saw the moisture on his cheeks.

My heart broke in an instant.

He was crying.

I knelt to the ground in front of him; he had his knees pressed to his chest and his face buried in his lap. He refused to look up at me; honestly, I wasn’t even entirely sure if he knew I was there.

When I saw his eyes a few minutes ago, they were unfocused, and he wouldn’t look directly at me. He was barely coherent.

“Warren…” I tried again, softening my tone even more and hoping to get through to him.

“Please.. mom… don’t die… don’t die…” he whimpered.

I sat back on my heels and stared at him. He was thinking about his mother. Possibly stuck in a dreamlike state as the memory of her overpowered him.

It made me wonder, not for the first time… what had happened to the Queen.

Leopold’s POV

Years ago.

The metallic scent of blood filled my nose; I woke up, feeling groggier than usual. I wasn’t in bed. I was lying on the ground, in the middle of the palace foyer. The morning light shone through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, making me wince from the sudden brightness. But it was quickly replaced with shadows.

Gamma warriors were all around me, staring down at me. Some masked with concern, others indifferent.

My memory of the night before was foggy, but the last thing I remembered was my mom tucking me into bed. I had asked her if Dad could come and read me a story tonight, as he had promised to do the last few nights, but she had to tell me he was busy with work again.

I knew my dad was always busy, but to think that he was too busy for me… it hurt. I tried not to let it bother me as I fell asleep… but it did.

Suddenly, Landon shoved his way through the wall of Gammas.

There was a concern in his eyes that made my chest tighten. I always knew Landon to be calm and collected. He had been

working for my father for a long time. But at this moment, he looked almost broken.

“Prince Leopold… you should return to your room,” Landon said, his voice tired. “It’s not safe for you here right now.”

It almost seemed as if he had aged overnight with his hunched shoulders and his worn eyes.

I was confused.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice filled with sleep, “Where’s my mom?”

Landon was quiet, his eyes becoming remorseful. It gave me a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t wait for Landon to say anything; I pushed past him and the guards despite their attempts at keeping me in their little bubble.
