Well, I needed her now. I needed her closer.
These other men would learn not to desire things that did not belong to them.
Lillian’s eyes went wide as I tugged her toward me. Grabbing her by the hips, I pulled her down so that she was sitting across my lap. With her settled, I wrapped my arms around her, keeping her right where she was.
“What are you doing?” she whispered, her blush turning her cheeks a pretty shade of pink that extended from her face, down her neck, all the way under her shirt.
“Stay here,” I told her, and like the good girl she was, she didn’t move. My wolf rumbled inside of me, pleased.
We were even more so when we looked up to catch Calvin’s glower.
The King watched me with some bemusement. “Can we begin?”
I nodded, and the meeting started, while Lillian remained in my lap.
“Our meeting today is about kingdom unity,” the King said. “You are each Alphas of your packs, and while those packs are individualized, they are also part of a whole. There has been some tension between packs as of late. I want to hear ideas to resolve this. Alpha Calvin, I am told you have a few ideas to start with.”
“Yes,” Calvin said, stepping forward. He couldn’t quite wipe the glare from his face as he did so, making him look annoyed as he spoke to the royals and the council. That wouldn’t earn him any points of favor. Already, the King was frowning. “I was thinking we could enforce some mandatory meetings to teach the people the value of unity. Perhaps you, your Majesty, could record a video that could be presented to all packs so they could be united under your glory.”
“That won’t work,” I said at once.
All eyes turned to me.
“You need to gain the people’s trust and confidence, to help them see outside themselves and their pack, and you wish to do so with… a mandatory meeting? A staged speech that would be the same for every pack?” I shook my head. “The people don’t need to be reminded that they are in a monarchy, they know that. They need to remember why that is good for them.”
The King considered me. “What did you have in mind, Grayson?”
“What about a kind of tournament, held here, for all the packs to attend, providing their best warriors for competition. They could show their individuality and their strength, but by the King’s grace and for his approval. Have them work toward something, earn something. And honor them through the spirit of the competition.”
“Ah,” the King said smiling. “The wolves of old held similar competitions. Yes, we shouldn’t crush our competitive spirit but give it a new, healthier direction.”
Looking around, I could see the others in the room agreeing, even the Elders who were notoriously difficult to please. Only Calvin seemed annoyed, his upper lip curling so much, he was practically snarling at me.
I had been away from these meetings from a time, but I hadn’t been blind to what had been going on. Calvin had been whispering in ears, making deals, and even gaining traction in the kingdom, I’d heard the whispers that the Elders had started considering him as a successor instead of me when I had been thought to be in a coma.
Well, I wasn’t in that coma anymore. I was here, and reaffirming my place as heir to the kingdom.

All with Lily in my lap.
Calvin glared at me like he wished I caught fire, but I just wrapped my arms more comfortably around Lillian’s waist and tried not to grin too smugly and give myself away.
