Grayson’s POV

As we walked back to the bedroom, I examined the growing displeasure that had appeared in my chest şince Lillian had said things so coldly, using such a strictly-business tone. Even now, she was shying from my touch swaying away from me.

I nudged her hand with my own.

“Sorry,” she said, and added more inches between us.

I didn’t try again, not in the hallway.

Once we reached the bedroom, I entered first. The minute she closed the door behind her, I walked closer to her, crowding her up against the door. She pressed herself hard against it, looking up at me with those large eyes of her, confusion prominent.

I wanted to confront her, to demand why she would slink away from me. But I stopped myself.

I didn’t care about her, or what she thought. I didn’t care about any of this. She was attractive, but that was an unwelcome distraction.

She had no hold over me. She meant nothing to me.

Even as he words crossed my mind, I lowered my mouth toward hers, like a mouth to a flame, unable to resist.

She licked her lips. Ready. Waiting.

I’d claim her mouth, make her weak in the knees, show her that she had no right to shy from something she clearly wanted to badly.

Just as my lips were about to press against hers, I stopped. Her breath was warm on my skin. Her eyes were closed, her chest heaving.

I wanted her. To kiss her. To claim more than her mouth.

The desire, so sudden and overwhelming, startled me, and I backed up, putting more distance between us,

Her eyes blinked open and more confusion filled her face.

I stood there, waiting for her to ask me what I thought I was doing. I was relieved when she didn’t, when she only looked at me, because I didn’t have a good answer.

The only answer I had was I wanted to kiss her. That wasn’t enough, not when I shouldn’t want her at all.

Leaving her, I walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I moved the dial all the way to cold.

Later, after avoiding Lillian as much as I could, the time came closer for a meeting I had to attend. I should have left Lillian in the room, probably. That would have been the smartest choice. Distance and time would help me recover the cool I should feel for her.

Instead, I found myself approaching her and saying, “I am attending a high-level meeting. You should be there.”

“Me?”

I gestured toward the wheelchair. “You will push my chair.”

She looked at the chair and then at me again. Just when I thought she might argue, she nodded instead. “Okay. Now?”

“Now.”

Even as she wheeled me to the throne room where the meeting was taking place, I had no idea why I was being so adamant she was with me. The meeting would be boring for her, consisting mainly of the Elders, the Royal Family, and the other Alphas.

As we entered, and I took in the full room, spotting Benedict and Calvin among the crowd, I started to have a better idea of what I had been planning, even without realizing it.

Calvin’s gaze snapped to Lillian at once, and as it trailed down Lillian’s body, my annoyance peaked. Calvin looked like he wanted to claim my mate. That wouldn’t do.

“There he is,” the King said. “Welcome, Grayson. Please, Lillian, bring him to the front.”

Lillian did as was requested, bringing my wheelchair right up to the base of the stairs. The King and Queen were on their thrones. The Elder Council was on the floor opposite of where I was, with the other Alphas and Benedict standing around the outside.

With my chair secure, Lillian released the handles. Watching Calvin watch Lillian, I reached out and snatched Lillian’s hand before she could get too far. Since she wasn’t a part of this meeting, she was likely wanting to retreat to the wall to wait until she was needed again?
