Chapter 157

Lillian’s POV

+15 Bonus

By the end of the day, I was physically exhausted from training my body so much so hard under the sun in the training grounds. I had refused to go to dinner in the dining room with the other ladies, instead choosing to return to my room with the intent of having something light being delivered to me there.

Yet, the minute I stepped into the palace from the training grounds, Odette rushed down the hallway toward me like she had been waiting by the window, watching for me to return. That was a ridiculous notion, of course. Odette was so popular, she had a million other things to do, people to talk to, than to wait around for me.

But still, seeing me, she hurried toward me, waving one hand in greeting. “Lillian! Lady Lillian I’m so pleased that I could catch you before it got too dark outside.”

What did that matter? I wondered, but did not ask aloud. The less Odette knew of my inner thoughts, the better, knew, as I had been harboring some unkind and unfair thoughts toward her for some time.

“How can I help you, Lady Odette?” I asked.

“Oh, please don’t be so formal. We’re practically family, aren’t we?”

Were we?

“I was just hoping… Well, I know things have been a bit rocky since my arrival, and I was hoping to talk to you, to set the record straight. And to apologize, of course. Oh, I do hope you will hear me out, Lillian. Maybe we could take a walk in the gardens. You will hear me out, won’t you?”

To turn away from her would be incredibly rude. I had no fondness for her, but Grayson did consider her a friend. Maybe I had misjudged her. Maybe she would set the record straight about the two of them, or maybe she would even want to help Grayson and me to repair things.

I wasn’t sure. I didn’t totally believe it.

But… my heart longed for Grayson, even as I tried to ignore it. If there was some way to repair things, even to understand better the friendship between he and Odette, then I felt compelled to do it.

“Alright,” I said.

Her smile grew impossibly wider, so bright I almost needed sunglasses to look at it.

“Great! Let’s go!”

She bounded forward quickly. I followed along behind her much slower, both because I was not as excited as her but also because I was physically exhausted from such difficult training,

She looked back a few times before forcing herself to slow to my gait so that she could walk along beside me,

“Sorry,” she said. “I’m just very excited.”

“I’m sorry, too,” I told her. “I’m just tired.”

“A slower pace is probably better for me. My health can be… challenging. Grayson keeps telling me not to overdo it. I guess I’m not so great at listening.”

I hummed noncommittally.

We walked out into the gardens, taking a different path than I had traveled with Benedict last week. The gardens

were massive, a bit of a maze with several different weaving paths. Odette walked around, leading the way, clearly knowing where she was going.

It stung more than I would have thought. She knew the way like she belonged here. I had been here some months now and still didn’t know the way around.

I didn’t want to compare myself to her, but… how could I not? Everyone else was. I didn’t like how I seemed to be falling short in comparison.
