Chapter 158

“But then he met me,” I said.
“Yes,” she said. “And you two are the perfect match, so well suited. They say opposites attract, and that couldn’t be truer than with the two of you. Grayson and I, we’re too much alike really. We used to be inseparable as kids. I swear if he wasn’t my shadow, I was his. We were glued at the hip.”
She continued talking, telling me about specific stories of the history she shared with Grayson. They had been there for each other through illnesses and milestones. Grayson had even lied once to get her out of trouble when they had stayed up late to eat snacks in the kitchens.
“The cook was so mad!” she said, smiling wide.
The affection between the two seemed deep and easy. A shared history tied them together. That was not something I could replicate. I couldn’t travel back in time to know Grayson of the past.
If I lost him… If he truly did choose Odette… Did I really have any hope of standing against her? I’d only known Grayson a handful of months. How could I compete with the years and years of shared history and easy affection he had for Odette?
“I can see from your face that I’m not doing very much to convince you that I’m not a threat,” she said, looking at me. “But I assure you, I have no intention of -”
Not looking where she was going, she tripped over her own dress and stumbled forward.
I reached out for her, but she fell in such a way that I couldn’t reach her to stop her fall.
She stumbled forward, straight into a tall, unsecured trellis. At the force of her hit, the trellis wobbled precariously and started to fall right for us!
Grayson’s POV
I had been mindlessly wandering, hoping to avoid Odette, who had been something of my shadow lately. I hadn’t truly minded at first, as I had missed her as a friend and was worried about her health. But, the longer this went on, the more I started to feel smothered.
Odette wanted to be such a big part of my life that she didn’t want to anyone else to fit there too. Not only had she objected or fell ill whenever I suggested going to see Lillian, but it started seeping into other things too. As prince and heir, I had duties to attend to daily, but she would cry pathetically whenever I tried to leave her to see Prime
Beta.
I liked Odette, but I was becoming exhausted.
Or I was just cranky.
Lillian still hadn’t returned to me. She hadn’t apologized. She hadn’t crawled back into our bed.
I was starting to think she never would. I was starting to wonder if it was my fault that she hadn’t yet.
I didn’t want to think I was at fault. She had been acting far too emotional, yet…
I missed her. More than I thought I would. More than I should.
She was on my mind more than I would like.
Even now, walking through the gardens, I swore I could hear her voice.
