Chapter 95
Lillian’s POV
Early the next morning, I startled awake, Grayson’s hand on my shoulder.
“Get dressed,” he said.
“What’s going on?”
“The King and Queen want to see me,” Grayson said. “As my mate, you should be there.”
“When?” I asked.
“As soon as you are ready.”
“Oh,” I said, and throwing back the covers, I hurried to get ready.
When I was dressed, I met Grayson at the door. He already had his cane, and held out his arm for me. I took it, trying hard not to think about the compliment he had given me the previous night.
We were going to meet the King and Queen. I needed to keep a straight face and a good composure.
I had thought we’d be headed to the throne room, but instead, Grayson led me to one of the smaller sitting rooms, where the King and Queen were waiting, each on their own high-back chair. Another man was also there, standing near the bookcases. A middle-aged man, he was smartly dressed with short hair and a pair of binoculars.
When the Queen spotted me, her brow twitched ever so slightly. “Lillian. We weren’t expecting you.”
“My mate is welcome where I go,” Grayson said.
“Of course,” the Queen said. “I was just surprised.”
The King gestured to the two-person couch facing their chairs. “Please, sit down. Both of you. We wish to introduce the doctor.”
“Please, I prefer the term physician,” the man said. I wondered if that meant if he didn’t have a medical degree.
Grayson led me to the couch and together we sat down, side by side.
“Physician Gilbert is talented with herbal remedies,” the King said. “We have summoned him to help you, Grayson.”
“I have a whole team of doctors already,” Grayson said.
“Those doctors haven’t been providing successful solutions,” the Queen said, gesturing to Grayson’s cane. “An Alpha should already be healed.”
Grayson tensed. “What are you suggesting?”
The King spoke quickly, “As modern medicine hasn’t seemed to help your mobility issues, Grayson, we believe we should branch out to other ideas. Physician Gilbert comes very highly regarded, and the old ways have lingered for a reason. We believe it’s worth a try, don’t you?”
Physician Gilbert stood very still, watching the discussion unfold. He was a tall and lanky man, observant, unmoving. Not knowing him, I had no reason to distrust him. Yet, something about him felt off to me. I couldn’t explain why, but I felt like I needed to keep an eye on him.

“I suppose…” Grayson said. The hesitation in his voice only had me more on edge. Grayson was perfectly healthy. He didn’t need any doctor, but now he was going to be saddled with another one? His present doctor was in on his act, but this new one couldn’t be. How was Grayson going to keep up the ruse?
“I wish to get started right away,” the physician said.
“I think that’s a wonderful idea,” the King said. “You can use this room. Darling, let’s see ourselves elsewhere.” He stood, and held out his hand for his wife, who took it.
The Queen smiled at Grayson and the physician, and both she and the King left the room. The physician reached down and revealed a medical bag he had stored behind one of the chairs. He brought it to a nearby coffee table and, after placing it down, opened it to start rummaging through.
“You are also welcome to leave, Luna Princess,” he said.

“Absolutely not,” I said so quickly, even Grayson glanced at me with curiosity. Clearing my throat, I said, “Y should be a part of my mate’s care.”
“Oh, of course,” Gilbert said. “I didn’t mean to imply that you had to leave.”
I really didn’t like this. What if this doctor was in with the people who attacked Grayson? What if they only wanted to hurt him further? How well was he vetted? Was Grayson just going to allow this?
I couldn’t let that happen, not while I was here. Not while I could do something about it. I stretched out a hand and placed it boldly onto Grayson’s chest, right over his heart.
Leaning in, dropping my voice to a whisper, I tried to be as seductive as I could. “Actually, I was hoping we could have some time alone, Grayson.” I kept my face low even as I looked up at Grayson, seeing him through my eyelashes. I pouted my bottom lip. “You promised we’d continue where we left off… You know how impatient I am.”
Grayson’s brow raised a fraction of an inch. His lip quirked upward ever so slightly.
“You don’t want to keep me waiting… do you?” I asked, batting my eyelashes.
He placed on hand over mine on his chest, the other wrapped around me. “Never,” he said, leaning down, and he kissed me.
This was no mere peck of lips.
This kiss was demanding, all-consuming. He pressed me back into the couch cushions, his lips coaxing mine open, his tongue slipping into my mouth.
“Uh,” Gilbert said. “Maybe we should reschedule,”
Grayson moved, pushing his torso into mine. All I could do was hold on as he kissed me down to my very soul.
Quietly, I heard the physician gather his things and slink away. The door opened and closed behind him.
Grayson kept kissing me. Lost in it, I kissed him back, our tongues tangling, our mouths moving as one.
Eventually, we needed to come up for air, and in that moment’s break, reality crashed back over me. Grayson was coming back in for another kiss, but I turned my head and dodged it.
“Is he gone?” I asked.
Grayson slowly sat back. “Was he who you were worried about?”

“We don’t know who that guy is, or what he really wants,” I said.
A hint of a smile crossed his lips. “You were concerned for me.”
I opened my mouth, but I couldn’t deny it.
“Be calm,” he said. “Gilbert is under my control. I’d heard that the King and Queen were searching for a physician of the old ways, so I made one for them to find. I was never in any danger.”
“Oh,” I said, deflating slightly. “You knew that, all this time. Even when you woke me up this morning.”
“I did.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“You didn’t need to know.”
I sat straighter, my heart aching. Had he… been toying with me?
“I am grateful for what you tried to do,” he said. “Even if it hadn’t been necessary.”
“Yes, well,” I said. I curled my fingers together in my lap, feeling like a fool. One that deserved mockery. It made me want to lash out. “We are in this together, aren’t we? We’re in the same boat. We both need to stay safe for our own purposes.”
The faint smile slipped off of Grayson’s face and he frowned instead. “You did this to save yourself…”
“For Ronan, mostly,” I said. My heart whispered, Liar, but I ignored it. Any affection I might feel for Grayson was both unwanted and unnecessary. “But I figure, we are something like business partners. We look out for each other, protect each other, to keep us both afloat.” When he didn’t say anything, I added, “Am I wrong?”
“No,” he said, but the word was quiet. Distant. “That’s how it is.”
